Hi thinksgeek,

Request you to follow the below steps:

(1) Turn on the Computer, at the Dell logo keep tapping F12 key.

(2) One time boot menu appears.

(3) Select the USB device option and hit enter.

Note: If it is a bootable device it will get detected.

If you have any further questions please reply to the same post.

The only options I see when I do this are "Windows Boot Drive" "Diagnosis" and "Setup." The device is in UEFI BIOS Mode and I want to keep it that way for Windows 8 FastBoot. If the device is in LEGACY BIOS Mode, I can boot from the USB Drive that way, but in UEFI, it wants me to add boot devices with a boot directory, which I have never had to use when booting from USB.

Hi thinksgeek,

Dell XPS 12 unfortunately will not boot the system through USB in UEFI mode as this is the way it has been setup. So you will have to disable the secure boot and enable Load legacy option rom in BIOS the same way as you have tried earlier. Then you can boot with USB in Legacy mode.

If you have further questions, please reply to the same post.

Hi Kiran,

I am trying to install a 64-bit Windows 8 version on my XPS 12.(Unfortunatelly it came with 32-bit WTF!) So are you telling me, that there is no way to install a 64-bit Windows 8 version on Dell XPS 12, cause as far as I know, I can't use legacy boot, cause the HDD format is not correct(It just doesn't want to install it on my HDD, cause of the file system is GPT or smth, etc...). Can you suggest any workaround???  I am dealing with that issue for so long and I have paid so much money to have problems like this.(I am a software developer and I am technically educated, its not, that I don't know what I am doing)

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tech0,

Sorry about the frustration. You can go ahead and install Windows 8 64-bit on this system. However, to convert GPT files to mbr the changes need to be made while installing the Operating system. You may refer the below link to check on converting GPT files to MBR files:

Hello Ivaylo,

I just played around with this and FINALLY got someplace. here is what you do.

boot into setup and disable secure boot.

next create a UEFI supported boot device. You can do that by following the instructions here:

http://windowsitpro.com/windows-8/q-how-do-i-create-bootable-usb-stick-can-install-uefi-system

next time you boot the device press F12 and the USB device should show as a boot device in the UEFI BIOS screen.

you could then re-enable secure boot mode.

FYI I just tested this on the XPS 12 that I have here with no issues.

Hope this helps.
