Dell XPS 15 L502X Graphical slow-mo issue, Anyone else? Help :)

Hi everyone / Dell,

So I just purchased three brand new Dell XPS 15 L502X laptops.  For starters, all 3 XPS 15 L502X laptops have the same spec's as below:

- 2nd gen Intel Core i7-2670QM processor (2.20 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.10 GHz)

- 8gb 1333MHz DDR3 memory (2 x 4gb sticks)

- Windows 7 64bit with SP1 Home Premium (Dell built pre-installed software)

- 2GB nVidia GeForce GT 540M dedicated video card with Optimus

Now, two of the laptops work perfectly with no problems (even with Optimus when switching between 3D applications like games and back to desktop).  On the third laptop, sometimes at random it goes slow mo / graphical animation is laggy.  I'd get a solid 60fps in a game, and completely at random at any time of day it will just drop and sit at 25 - 30fps.  But it's not just lowering the FPS, it litrally makes the whole game run "slow-mo", as if I'm watching every frame in slow motion from a 1000 frame per second video camera of a bullet going through glass like slowness.  So I exit the game and go back to desktop, I know Optimus just kicked in as normal and changed from the dedicated GeForce GT 540M video card back to the desktop running onboard Intel video card as the brightness drops slightly.

But it gets worse, the slowness continues on the Desktop now as well.  For example, I will minamize a program and instead of it fluently minamizing to my taskbar, it again like a 1000 frames per second video in slow mo, it slowly minamizes to the taskbar.  Now keep in mind, the system in general is 100% responsive and is not lagging, only the graphical animations are lagging.  I checked out my task manager and the CPU usage is only sitting around 1% - 3%.  Memory usage is sitting at around 2gb used with 6gb available.

I even went as far as un-installing the video drivers and other system drivers and re-installed the drivers and it still continues to do this every now and then at random.  I downloaded and installed HW Info 64 application.  I ran it on one of the good laptops that works fine and during the slow mo stuff on the third laptop I also ran the HWINFO64 software.  The thing I noticed was that even though task manager was reporting all cores of the CPU were pretty much sitting idle on the good laptop, the bad slow mo running laptop was showing me that all 4 cores were at random spiking left right and center every second.  Sometimes 1 core spikes upto 3.30ghz (with turbo boost), the very next second 3 cores will do it etc.

So is this a hardware fault, driver fault or software fault?

Has anyone else experienced this?

Is this some kind of bug with maybe some memory on the video card or optimus software on the hardware chips screwed or?

Please help :)

The only solution I have at the moment is to reboot the laptop and hope it does not do it again.

I forgot to mention that all three laptops are running the bios version A07.  I also forgot to mention that it's not an overheating issue as this has happened even without running any 3D application.  Also, the vent that is blowing air out is quite cool and not hot at all even when this happens while not running a game or 3D application when the slow mo stuff occurs.

Just wanted to add that after some more testing it appears to be definately a CPU issue.  I've found some others with a similar problem on other laptops and they fixed their "slow-mo" issue be disabling Intel SpeedStep in the BIOS.  But is this really nessecary?  The overall CPU performance of the laptop now is slower than what it should be or what I paid for these laptops from Dell because of software/hardware fault?  Anyone else know of a way to fix this?

hi there i ve noticed that my l502x too have the same problem, every thing appears in slow motion.for now only re starting the pc helps.cant find any apparent reason for this.r u sure this is a hardware problem? thnx in advance

same issue for me.

I noticed it first when playing a game - TF2. Seemed very odd as FPS were fine and everyone else was running about as usual at usual speed i would move in slow motion - even jumping was slow motion as if there was less gravity!

I thought it was a game issue at first but then noticed the window graphics when maximizing and minimizing also goes slowly. When i restart the problem seems to be resolved but this is not ideal and on a brand new machine is not acceptable.

I have noticed the problem seems to occur on the first bootup of the day quite often suggesting it happens when the machine has been off for a certain period of time although i am not 100% sure on this. If so i have no idea what might be causing it.

I have updated graphics drivers for the gpu but as the issue also occurs in windows when it will not be in use i don't think it's a gpu issue. Something is being limited incorrectly but everything runs in normal speed apart from certain animations...confused!

hi there guys,

just now had the slow mo problem.this morning when every thing's running fine i downloaded dell support center and diagnostics, ran complete diag, everything showed up passed.few mins ago got the slow mo issues, ran diag again while simultaneously monitoring processor clock speeds on intel product id utility(mine is i5 2410-- 2.33)(when slow mo hit ,it spiked to 2.7 and stayed there).processor, hdd, ram, intel gfx, rest of the stuff passed,,,,,but.....motherboard diagnostics showed *****RTS ACCURACY TEST FAILED............FAILED.........WSB01.....HL-5*****////also found this, u guys have to see this    en.community.dell.com/.../19879751.aspx------------.found the answer to this issue.this stuff is not good.seems like either the battery or the mother board(pretty much)ve to be replaced.google the issue u ll see.im planning to call dell tomorrow.just recorded all screen to show them, wish me luck.....

Thanks Dr Kevin

Interested to hear how you get on.

Mine hasn't repeated the problem for a while now so unable to run diagnostics but will be ready for next time it happens. That link you posted is not valid btw.

Does your slo-mo kick in at random times? Mine occurs from startup and wont stop until i re-start. I'm trying to determine if it happens when the charger is not connected or something like that.

I have not seen the issue since Dell gave me my replacement laptop for the one that was doing it.  But still, the problem needs to be found and fixed by Dell.  I also ran a hardware diagnostic on the one that had the problem and the hardware diag that took over 2 hours returned no errors with anything.  I also forgot to mention, that when disabling speed stepping in the A07 bios, I did not have this problem again, mind you I only had a week of testing before I got my replacement one and had to send the Dell one back.

yes most of the times its random but some times it starts in slomo, by the way i found out the cause.see the hardware cmos has a time and the software has one.normally both of should be in sync whic is checked by rtc test, but some time due to isuues in bios or mother board or batttery the sync is lost causing sys to act weired.so wen u restart the sync gets reset and functions normally.wen we turn of the lappy sys uses on board battery to calluclate time so,if any issue with either of the three components it ll result in rtc test failure.i called dell yesterday told em the prob they asked me to flash(reinstall) my bios which i did,and asked me to see if the prob still persists if it does then its with mb or batt.so far so good played crysis all night to exaust the lappy to see if i find any issue the nxt day,no issues for now.hope this fixes the issue,i suggest u guys flashing bios and see if it resolves, good luk

Mine only happens from startup and I havent had it kick-in once the laptop is up and running fine. I've also tried flashing the bios - I originally updated to the latest BIOS version (A10) prior to noticing the problem. I then reverted to the previous one A06 to see if it fixed the issue. Unfortunately it didn't make a difference and i have since gone back to A10 - it seems to happen less frequently with A10 but still does occur. I'm waiting for it to happen again so i can run the diagnostics but might send a message to Dell a message to get the ball rolling.

Mine is also with this problem, Already flashed the BIOS and still happening too. I got in contact with dell, running the diagnostic by support request we found a hard-drive error, I dont think its a hard drive error since the slow-mo seems graphics issues. Awaiting exchange HD to run the diagnostic again.

I have an i7 xps 17 which has the same issue on it.  It clears if I restart.  This is my third dell lap top (out of 4) which has intermittent faults on it.  The warranties are worthless since the faults are intermittent, when they run the fault-finding they find no fault and there is nothing you can do.

Yes, this is exactly what I have on my l702x, the fault is there on start-up or not-at-all.  Usually a restart fixes it but not always, it happens on about one-in-five start-ups.  I figured it wasn't graphics also because it is there on desktop, I can tell with how fast the machine executes commands, I can tell with windows opening slightly slower.  I bought my machine new via ebay with a warranty will Dell honour this warranty?  I don't see why I should just put up with this.  Any advice is welcome.  I have an i5 machine inspiron that has had a blue screening issue on it all the way through.  I have found Dell Warranties to be worthless in the past where they are reluctant to send anyone out at all and just insist there is nothing wrong with the machine.

hi there every one,do the following steps to solve ur issue

1)SYSTEM STARTS UP SLOW(RANDOM)

2)RUN PC DOCTOR     (CUSTOMIZED TEST=MOTHERBOARD)

3)RTC TEST FAILED REPORT APPEARS( SAVE THE REORT)

4)OPEN ANY VIDEO/GAME RECORD A VIDEO WITH A CAMERA (BE SURE TO RUN THE PC ON POWER NOT     BATTERY AND MAKE SURE U SHOW THAT IN UR VID

5) CALL DELL

6)MAIL THE TECH SUPPORT THE SCREEN SHOTS AND TEST REPORTS IF POSSIBLE

7 WHEN THE TECH ARRIVES SHOW THE VIDEO

****IMPORTANT****

1.MUST USE A CAMERA TO SHOOT THE VID.NO SCREEN CAPTURE SOFTWARE

2.WHEN U CALL TELL TECH SYS SLOWS DOWN AND RANDOMLY FAILS DIAG.DO NOT STRESS SLOW MO ISSUE FOR THEY HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT THE ISSUE AND LL TALK U THROUGH TELLING ITS A SOFTWARE ISSUE

****ITS A HARDWARE ISSUE(MOTHERBOARD OR ADAPTER OR THE BATTERY****

MINE WAS MOTHERBOARD( AFTER 2 REPLACEMENTS 3 RD SEEMS WORKING FINE

I HAD 2 MOTHERBOARD REPLACEMENTS,2 AC ADAPTER REPLACEMENTS,2 H SINKS,2 FANS,PROCESSOR,TOUCH PAD--------XPS 15 IS A LEMON

GOOD LUCK GUYS

Ok, I don't have a camera to take a photo of the failed test.  Is there anything else I can do.
