Did you watch the technician attach the backlit keyboard? Did the technician connect bot wires from the keyboard?
Go to Drivers & Downloads enter your service tag, then select your operating system. Under Applications, download and install Dell QuickSet. See if you can then control the backlit keyboard.
Actually I was away at the time. A friend said he would wait for the engineer whilst I was away. The engineer said to him that they werent to sure if it was a backlit keyboard because of there only being one wire.
I installed Quick Set, and chose the option to install the Backlit Keyboard and all other Sub Options onto my hard drive, but nothing had seemed to change.
Start, control panel, Windows Mobility Center. You should see a box that is marked Keyboard Brightness on. Click on the little square and you should see the settings.
Hello, I have a similar issue: The Windows Mobility Center, Waves Maxx and Dell Instant Launch Manager buttons as well as the keyboard backlight are not working anymore. I tried the different quickset version, but it didn't fix the issue. I'm on W7, please let me know if you have an idea. Thanks Sam

The "Keyboard Brightness" option is not listed in the mobility centre.

Euan,
The the second wire on the backlit keyboard may not be attached.
Which model fo you own? Should have a L number, like L701x or L702x

Euan,
Since you're under warranty, I would contact Dell Tech Support and tell them the backlit keyboard is not working.
The instructions are HERE <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> but it looks a little more involved than my system is.
