Dell XPS L502x 5 Beeps - Real Time Clock Failure

Jump to solution

Hello.

I had a problem with my Note, first the Harddrive was broken and i exchanged the harddrive. Now during new start up, it was not possible to restart it. So i made an BIOS reset. Now it is still not possible to restart and i get 5 beeps - what due to manual means "Real Time Clock Failure".

What is it?? And how to solve??

Thanks in advance

Hi Nightyboy,

The 5 beep code indicates CMOS battery failure; Try releasing the static power and check if the system is working. Follow the steps below.

Switch off the system; remove the battery, ac adapter and the power cable. Press and hold down the power button for thirty seconds to drain any excess static power. In case the problem persists you may have to replace the CMOS battery, you can refer to the user manual using the link below to replace the CMOS battery.

Hi Nightyboy,

Thanks for the update, please try with a known good adapter and check if the system works? In case the issue persists this may be an issue with the motherboard.

RE: Dell XPS L502x 5 Beeps - Real Time Clock Failure

Hi,

I have a similar problem.

My system is a Dell Vostro. It restarts when it is on for a while and once it restarts the date and time is reset. I initially thought it was a fan problem and we opened and cleaned the fan and since the time and date is getting reset we replaced the cmos battery.

However the problem still persists. The symptoms are as under

1. System does not start when not plugged into power

2. When i plug it into power it starts automatically

3. There is a 5 beep sound (indicating a cmos failure) at the time of booting

4. System date and time is re-seted (again cmos failure)

5. it restarts if it remains on for a while.

Something is causing the cmos to fail again and also the power on function. could it be the power button problem?

Thanks and Regards,

Shravan

No -- if you've already changed the battery, and still hear the 5 beep sequence, the clock chip itself has gone bad.  The mainboard will need to be replaced.
