Dell XPS M1330 HDD problems

Hi all,

Have just replaced my old HDD with new Seagate ST9500420AS 500gb HDD all was well when reinstalling, apart from windows updates whch hanged several times but after a very long while updated. Came back to Laptop last night and have had these messages...

win/systems/config/system

Status 0xc00000e9

Win failed to load system reg files missing or corrupt

Ran diagnostics and had this...

Error Code 0146

Msg: error code 2000-0146

Msg: Unit 1: Dst log contains previous errors

Tried reinstalling supplied vista dvd but took me back to the top error. Have pressed f12 to boot from hdd got to the language options page then pressed next came across the choose system to log drivers from box (i think it was last night) nothing in box. Cant be my new drive surely as ive just bought it...culd it be a knackered motherboard hdd connector? if so as its 5 years old should i cut my losses and just buy a new one. Any help much appreciated.

Hi andyoldy,

I will recommend you to run the 'Custom Test' on the hard drive following the below steps:

  • Restart the system and keep tapping 'F12' as soon as the Dell logo appears.
  • Highlight 'Diagnostics' using up and down arrow keys and press enter.
  • Once you get 2000-0146 error, continue the test.
  • After sometime, you will get a message 'Would you like to run the remaining memory test'.
  • Press 'N'.
  • Press any key to boot to utility partition.
  • The system will boot to utility partition.
  • Select 'Test system'.
  • Select 'Custom test' and select 'Hard drive' to run the test.

Please let me know the exact error code while running Custom test, if any.

Please reply for any further questions.

Hi Vikram thanks for your reply,

Have run diagnostic tests but as this is a brand new hd there is no diagnostic utility partition. So it just boots back to error recovery screen. I have diagnostic dvd but im thinking perhaps i should format the drive if it lets me.

Regards,

It's failed confidence test and now error code 0f00:065d msg:ideal device failed: the self test failed the read portion of the test. So now failed smart test. On verify test it has error code 0f00:1a44. On read test error code 0f00:0244.but device quick passes.. I think my new day old hd is a dud..
