The same thought passed my mind today and I had a good look.

A Top shelf upgrade would be;

  • 2GB Nvidia 9800M GTX SLI Laptop Video Card
  • Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000 64bit Mobile Processor (800 MHz FSB)
  • 4GB DDRII RAM

You will see in the m1730's owners manual that only the following processors are supported;

  • 2 MB or 4 MB (Intel Core 2 Duo processor)
  • 6 MB (Intel 45 nm Core 2 Duo processor)

Continuing only Duo processors are stated again in the chipset documentation so i think our dreams of Extreme quad core chips are over..

On purchasing the m1730 there was an option for a 32bit or 64bit processor, maybe this is the option you are remembering...

There is a Core 2 Duo X9100 processor which sounds great but its FSB (1066MHz) is above the m1730's chipset which only supports 533 & 800 MHz.

I hate to hijack someone's thread but I've got some questions about upgrading an XPS M1730 as well, the Dell vs Intel documentation among other things.

Just noting here in hopes of attracting additional visibility.
