Because they want semi-portable powerhouse computers. Some want them for lan parties and other's just like laptops better. 8 - 10 pounds isn't that heavey for some people. Also, not everyone is going to be bringing it everywhere with them, like you may be as you're going to class with it, and they just want a powerful computer that they can bring with them on vacations and such.
Dell's 8600 notebook cost's between $2,973.00 to $3,181.00 shipped to Florida
You can get the I8600 for under $1500. The one in my sig was $1800, and I'd recommend getting it with a 1.7GHZ which would bring it up to $2000 (you probably won't notice the difference, but if you have the extra cash, why not?). Kick
a s s gaming machine, only 7 lbs, and great battery life.
The reason people want superlaps is because its easier to take it home whenever you go home. Would you rather A. take the monitor down and then the tower or B. take it all at once and have it only way 10 pounds. I for one would rather have B and then when you need a computer in class you have the chance to take it. And a lot of people dont take their laptops to class because decent colleges already have computers setup on a network for classes that need the use of computers. The only pro for having a laptop in college is being able to take it home very easily.
You may want to check out the Alienware section at
www.talknotebooks.com if you're interested in the 51m. There seem to be some issues with the 16.1" screen. People over there do love the 15.4-incher though.
A desktop replacement laptop is ideal for people who work. You seldom need to lug the machine around while at work. It's quite different setting from school with a new class every hour.
Or someone who works at home but sometimes needs to make representations at customers office. Practically anyone who needs to take their computer with them, but not do that all the time.
The more you carry it, the lighter you want it to be. With just taking it to work and back every day, it doesn't really matter if it weighs 2.5 or 25.0 lbs.

I just checked out Alienware's notebook computer, and the price for the below spec's is better than the Dell's XPS.
3.2 Ghz (only down side) Dell's a 3.4
16.1 inch UXGA Screen (Nice) Dell's 15.4
1024 Memory
Free Shipping
24x10x24/8xDVD
3 year warranty...............Cost shipped to door $3,249.00 Maxed out with everything
The 15.4 wide screen instead of the 16.1 screen costs $2,883.00
Dell's XPS as of today cost's between $3,406.00 to $3,644.00 shipped to florida. We in Florida have to pay taxes
Dell's 8600 notebook cost's between $2,973.00 to $3,181.00 shipped to Florida, this is also maxed out with everything and not a stripped down model
However, this is still out of budget for you, Sorry

I for one do not wanna lug a 9-10 lb beast to class everyday.
this is why im going to get a tablet/laptop and build a cheap desktop.

I was going to post the link for the 3.8 GHz one but they added a soon-to-be 4.0 GHz one.
