Dell xps 13

Easy question. My xps 13 was supposed to have a 128 gb sdd, but only shows 96 gb. With all the stuff that comes on the system, and after loading only 15 gb of music and 600 mb of other files, I have 15 gb of space left. I have not found this issue posted, could use some advice. Thanks.

Hi am.leonard68,

128 GB SDD Hard drive shows 96 GB in your computer because, about 20 GB of the hard drive space is used as hidden partition for the factory restore image in case of Operating system corruption.

Also, Windows calculates 1GB =1024MB but the hard drive manufacturer’s count is 1GB = 1000MB, again there would be some reduction in the space.

With 96 GB space on your computer 15 GB – 20GB will be used by your operating system.

You would also have installed some third party applications like office, antivirus, software’s & games etc, which would have occupied some more space in the hard drive.

Hence hard drive would have used up the space and will be showing as 15GB remaining.

Please follow the link below to optimize and maintain your computer so that you can free up some space on your computer.

I hope you find this useful.

That link has Defrag as a suggestion.  Do not defrag your XPS 13 or any other PC with a SSD!

Best thing you can do is get a large USB thumb drive (32GB) or larger and put your music on that.

Then point your Media Player (i.e. iTunes) to the USB drive for your music.

This is what I did.  In iTunes preferences, I selected the USB drive as my iTunes folder.  I plug the drive in and then start itunes.
