Dell xps 14z (L412z) CD Drive Problem!

Hey guys,

I bought a Dell xps 14z about 4 months ago and it's working great, except for the cd-drive.
From the very first day I opened it I noticed that there was something wrong. When I put a CD in there, it would make a rather loud noise trying to run it,
and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
The computer itself becomes slow and laggy until I eject the drive.
The computer would be fast and normal, until I right click, or double click, on the drive to open it, explore it, etc..
it would start loading the CD but may never load it correctly until I eject... then the computer's back to normal.
Also, the CD drive makes random ejecting noises even if there is no CD inside (at computer power-up, when certain programs are launched, a usb is inserted)

What I'm trying to ask is this:

Is this a software/driver problem? or a hardware problem?
because if it's software I can just get your feedback on how to fix it myself, if hardware I'll use my warranty to get it fixed.
Note: I did install a clean image from the restore partition recently hoping it would change anything, but it didn't.

Thank you for your time.

Hi Bassem Bassiouny,

Since you performed restoration on the system, please follow the troubleshooting steps below to isolate the issue:

1. Check the Disc Placement in the Drive. Ensure that the disc is securely fastened to the center spindle. There will be an audible "click" from the disc when it is seated onto the drive's spindle.
2. Optical drive makers sometimes provide firmware updates hence, I would suggest you to update the Drive's Internal Software from Dell’s support site.
3. Also test the drive with other media like Recovery CD received from Dell. Try to boot from the Recovery CD by pressing F12 while starting up the system. Please let me know if you hear any noise.

Meanwhile, please send me the system Service Tag in a private message so that I can check your system details.

I have added you as a friend. Please accept my friend request by clicking on my name highlighted in blue and then click on “Friends” tab at the top and then click on “Request to Review” and finally click on “Accept” button.

I am sending you a private message as well. Click on “Inbox” to respond to the message and provide system’s Service Tag and contact details so I may access your system records and check for further course of action. You could also click on Start Conversation to send a private message.

Please reply to my private message.

Thanks and Regards

Hello Priyanka S,

Thank you for your reply.

My laptop is a xps 14z and therefore the cd goes into the slot automatically, I'm not the one who places it into the center spindle. There is no spindle visible to me at all.

I will try to update all the drivers. I am now on the Dell website, I can't however find any support for the Optical Drive. Maybe the Optical Drive driver needs to be downloaded from another website such as the manufacturer of the optical drive.. but I don't know who that would be. Dell's support website is not helping in this respect.

Also good to mention that I did not only start getting this problem after I performed system restoration. I have had this problem ever since I bought the laptop.. from day 1.

I have replied to you private message and hope you can provide support for my problem.

Thank you again.
