Design Thoughts

I must say I've been pleasantly surprised with Dell's industrial design department lately, you guys are really making a move in the right direction with some of your new designs.

Looking at the XPS I see some obvious signs of a little TLC in the design, material choice is prime in many places. It looks like the handle is made of a sort of resiliant but soft rubber, a good choice, as is the inclution of the handle. I get the idea that this is meant to park on a desk and maybe move to the occational LAN party or so. I wish the design spoke more of the human interaction to close then grasp. A difference in color and material on the top of the monitor would be good (pick a nice material that just begs 'touch me!') The chrome bits in the ends of the handle look out of place to me, a colder tougher material would continue the stoic feel of the rest of the design. On that note I think a material change in the silver trim would help, I think a darker brushed metal would be better fitting. The gloss material on the top of the central unit i think is a bad choice especially with it being black, it will gather dust in an instant and show every little scratch/fingerprint it has. The inclusion of a camera for web comfrencing and such is a great addition, though it looks like it was placed at the bottom of the monitor? It would be an odd looking angle, the top of the monitor would be a better choice. The cooling vents look very unispiring, as if they were slapped in at the last moment out of need. More attention to them would be good for the design, as would the ports. The ports look to stick in/out and every wich way, a nice clean even face would really be a benefit (it can be done, Apple does it) The latch mechanism also looks very unelegant. On a final note the gaps look quite bad, they are wide an inconsistent. Fit and finish are very important for the perceved quality of a product. Overall a neat concept I think, talors very well to the target market (however slim it may be) I think making it easily upgradable will be one key to sucess.

Oh, and on a side note to the images on the CES page, the background of the XPS is very, very badly photoshopped in...it anoys me

cheers
