Disapearing cursor over a horizontal line on display

I just got a brand new replacement i8500 and my cursor will dissappear while crossing a horizontal line across the display and then will start to reappear a pixel or so above.

But if i reset the screen resolution it fixes itself. (By the way I have the latest drivers and applied the Bios update for my graphics card-NVidia)

Why is this so?

I just noticed this recently after installing the latest video bios for the GeForce 4 4200 Go off Dell's website. So from what I can figure, it is a driver bug although I have only just started looking into what the problem is.

I now have to ring Dell tomorrow and find out about the original BIOS, or how long I have to wait until they fix this problem... Very annoying that my mouse keeps disappearing right in the center of the screen. I have only had this thing a little over a week.

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post to the Dell forums since I got my 8500 earlier this year. I too have just updated my video card from the Dell website and now have the same horizontal 'line' you have described. Interestingly, when I resume from standby, the line shifts to the very top of the screen, but otherwise is right in the middle. It is very strange that only the cursor disappears behind this line and not any other screen graphics - so the screen looks entirely normal until you try and move the cursor through the middle of screen when it entirely vanishes! I hope there will be a solution to this very soon - it's quite annoying when you go to click on something and suddenly you can't see what you're clicking with!

Regards,

David

I find a means:

Click "Start" - "Run", Enter "Msconfig" in the text box and run it.

Click "Startup", Cancel "NvCpl" in the "Boot items".

OK!!!

BTW:

I use the Chinese edition, May be some words is not correct.

I had the same problem after upgrading the BIOS. Use the INSPIRON 8600 nVidia GeoForce4 4200 drivers on the 8500, they fix the problem. Even though the supported systems on the driver info page says only 8600, when you actually install the driver it says 8600, 8500 and latitude.

Well, I sent a message to Dell Support and was told they would ring me. I didn't receive a phone call yesterday, but I hope to receive one today...

Rather than waiting for Dell Support to give me a call back, I opted for installing the latest video drivers for the I8600 (which support the 8500 also from what it says), and now everything works fine again. And as an added bonus, Midnight Club 2 now runs properly on my system.

It's just great when everything works properly. Gives you a feeling of releif when you don't need to do anything but enjoy what you have.

I have this problem too. I installed the latest (A04) drivers for the Inspiron 8600 but the problem persists.

Perhaps Dell needs to release an updated video BIOS for my Geforce 4200?

Rance- any update on this?

Well, one thing I notice different on yours is that you have a WUXGA screen where mine is a WSXGA+ screen. I don't know if this would make a difference, but since mine seems to work perfectly now, it could have.

I received a phone call from Dell regarding my previous request for information from them, and they told me that I have to talk to nVidia about it. They say that I have to get the old bios and possibly different drivers from nVidia. It seems like another case of finding a scapegoat to me, like every company seems to do.

I asked Dell about using the drivers from the 8600 section and was told that I shouldn't, but after explaining that it said it supported the 8500 and waiting a few minutes for the support guy to check with his superior, was told that I could.

In any case, the driver from the 8600 section seems to have fixed the problem on my system, but I am unable to figure out why it did not work on yours npgall. Sorry.

This quote is from the Nvidia Faq.

"Are there any newer video BIOS upgrades for my NVIDIA-based graphics card?

You will need to contact your graphics card manufacturer for the latest custom BIOS for your graphics card. NVIDIA does not provide a reference BIOS for NVIDIA-based graphics cards because flashing a graphics card with an incompatible BIOS can permanently damage your graphics card. Instead, you should contact your graphics card manufacturer for a custom BIOS that has already been tested and qualified to run without any problems. If your graphics card came bundled with your PC, then you will need to contact your PC manufacturer. In most cases, a BIOS upgrade is not needed. Most issues are resolved through driver updates and not video BIOS updates. "

Now my question is, did Dell permanently break our video cards as the Nvidia Faq suggests could happen.  If so, I think it shows exactly how poor the customer support of Dell is.  Thus far, I'm pretty unsatisfied with the support I've recieved, I was under the impression that Dell had the best service in the business but every time I've called tech support I've spoken to someone who can barely speak english and doesn't understand the product.  I even spoke to one person who didn't know that Dell had 8500's, he thought that the latest was the 8100.  I love my machine, but I feel like I got scammed on the service aspect.

Well, the BIOS obviously wasn't tested before it was released, how could you miss out on a line going through the screen which makes the cursor disappear. Unless they are using later version of the drivers, but if they are, the drivers should be available to us, and I don't see any later ones except for the i8600 downloads.

All,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Please try the Inspiron 8600 drivers mentioned above, and if this does not fix your problem, please post here.
