I am not trying to connect my phone to the laptop. I am trying to use the headset (headphones) that came with the iPhone to do Skype, WebEx, GotoMeeting, etc. I am asking if when I plug the headphones into the headphone jack (NOT a USB), is it supposed to pick up the inline microphone of the headphones.
Does the audio jack/port support both audio out and microphone in?
Yes, the Latitude E6540 has a headset jack (a headset is a device that combines headphones with a microphone). However Dell does not provide a list headsets that are compatible with its products, so whether or not a particular model of headset will work is anybody's guess.
I "fixed" the issue. When I plug in my iPhone ear buds (which have an inline mic), a menu comes up asking me what my device is. I had been choosing "headphones." When I chose "headset" from the menu, the mic picks up and all works as desired. Sometimes things are simpler than I make them. Thanks all for trying to help.

chaplaindoug,
Headphone jack - Used to connect audio peripherals. Attach headphones or speakers to the connector.
If you want to plug your phone into the computer you may want to plug it into the USB port.
