E1505 max memory

I just bought an E1505 with 2 gig of memory, the max that the ell website said it could handle.  But I have hear that I could put in 2 pcs of 2-gig sodimms and have a total of 4 gig installed, but 32bit XP or Vista will only see 3 gig, where as 64 bit verisons will see all 4 gig.  can anyone confirm?

Also, I assume if I install only 1 2-gig memory to start it will run fine?

Thanks

Max RAM officially is 2X1G = 2G total.

It may or may not be possible to run more.

You are correct about the memory addressing in Windows.

Running a single 2G (if it works) vs. 2X1G will cost you 10-15% in performance, since the system is designed to operate in dual channel mode.

I tried two 2gig Crucial pc2-4200 Sodimms and it just booted up with 2gb and totally ignored the other two at the bios level.
