Error installing latest graphics driver from Intel. Please help

Question

I downloaded the latest graphics driver from Intel web site for my Inspiron 630m notebook. However when I try to install the driver I get the error "This driver cannot be installed on this computer. Please contact the computer's manufacturer for further information. Setup will exit". I am sure that I downloaded the correct driver, url is given at the end of this post.

The version number of the latest driver hosted at Dell support site is 6.14.10.4410 Released on October 20, 2005. But there is no such version at the Intel site. At Intel site there is a 6.14.10.4396 Released on September 29, 2005 and a 6.14.10.4421 released on November 9, 2005. So by looking at the versions and release dates the driver at Dell site is released between the above two, and I suspect that it is a special release for dell only . Why do they lock or make special drivers ?? Why cant Dell allow us to install the Intel original driver ?? Cos having special drivers mean we wont get the latest updates from Intel as and when they are released.

There are 3 driver versions in Intel site which came after the last driver at Dell site. This is really dissapointing.

I'm having the same problem. Anyone know how to get around this? (This driver cannot be installed on this computer. Please contact .... manufactor. Set will exit.)

Dell D505 Lattitude
Intel 82852/82855 Graphics Controller

Dell's driver is two years old.
Intel driver: ver 14.19.50 released 2/8/2006

Obviuosly this controller won't run Vista's Aero interface, but it would still be nice to get the most out of it.

I reinstalled windows few weeks after posting my message and then installed the Intel driver, after that I never had problems upgrading with Intel drivers. I think if you first install the Dell branded driver afterwards you cant install from Intel. But I think if you mess with the driver a bit, maybe try to mix few files from the Dell branded driver package with the Intel driver, you might be able to fool the Dell brand check and upgrade; but I didn’t peruse the matter much further because anyway I wanted to install a clean copy of Windows to get rid of all the DELL pre installed stuff.

Intel original driver has few more options than the Dell branded one, and it keeps getting updated, so it is better to install it if you can.

BTW you said the driver at the Dell site is 2 years old, does that mean you have 830M chipset ? Not 852/855 GM/GME ? because Dell driver for 855 GM is only 1 year old. If you have 830M then downloading from Intel wont help either because even the last Intel driver version for 830M is 2 years old (8/31/2004).

I had the same problem.  I also resinstalled windows and after doing so, was able to update the video driver with no problems.   My reason was to change to Windows XP Pro from Media Center because I needed networking features that weren't available in Media Center.  After installing the new OS, I installed all of the original Dell drivers that were on the drivers and utilities disk except for the video driver and the Notebook System Software (because no one seemed to know what it did).   I now have no problem updating or changing any drivers.  The newer Intel driver is much better than the dell driver and may be worth the trouble of reinstalling your OS just to get it.  I had horrible graphics problems using the dell driver, but with the newer intel driver the graphic performance has greatly increased.  Graphics are more smooth and DVD's are much clearer and sharper.

Updating my post.
Sorry your right. The driver dell offers is only a year old (not 2). I was looking at to many driver packages at once.

I actually just reinstalled the OS. However I used the dell offered video driver before realizing it was old. So that must be where the update problem begins.
As a side note I talked to dell and was told that I just have to wait until they rewrite the driver package and post it. I pointed out that intel released newer drivers about 9 months ago and was told there is no way to know when or even if dell will update its drivers package to match.

It will be interesting to see how long we have to wait for vista drivers!

While waiting for DELL to release a new driver (which may never happen), you can try out following two tricks. I can't guarantee that either one will work because I haven't personally tried them myself.

The Intel original driver (from Intel site) is same for 855/910/915 and 945 (you can see from the readme.txt file), since DELL just re-brand Intel drivers as their own without writing them, I am sure that the actual driver files are same with Intel driver package. They must be just modifying the installer to check for DELL branded ones. Therefore there is a possibility that even a DELL branded driver for a later Latitude like D510 (released 7/13/2006) may work with your D505. So first try to install the video driver of D510.

If that doesn't work here is another one:
If you extract the driver package, you can see 2 folders "Lang", "win2000" and 7 other files. All the actual driver files are in the "win2000" folder. Therefore first download and extract drivers of both D505 and D510. Then replace the win2000 folder of D505 with that of D510, and run the setup.exe. If it works then it should install updated drivers of D510 because the driver folder contains new files.

I can say with 99% confidence that these tricks should not cause any problems with Windows XP installation, but I have to also warn you that there is always a risk in playing around with drivers. Therefore if you are a complete newbie, and if you don't know how to recover from a XP driver issue (safe mode) then you better not do it, or at least backup your data before doing this.

I just reinstalled the OS again (I didn't want any residual funny stuff). Then used only drivers downloaded from intel. Except for the audio driver which intel doesn't post (Big deal, its not like I'm trying to reproduce a movie theater with my onboard audio).
