Extended desktop over 2 monitors

Is it possible to extend the desktop over 2 external monitors (i.e. not includuding the notebook screen), either by using the DVI and VGA ports together or with other hardware?

For clarification, I want to have different screens on each monitor....not the same screen duplicated.

I am using a Latitude D620.

Many thanks

Tim

No, not without a docking station and a PCI video card in it.

I have the standard Dell docking station with both DVI and VGA ports. Do I also need a video card?

You need the docking station with PCI card support for a video card, and yes, you need the video card.

Understood. I have the standard dock without PCI support. Before I upgrade my dock, I'm guessing from your responses that I cannot use the PCI slot in the notebook for the second monitor?

There are no mini PCI video cards, so you are correct.

I have the new Dell Dock with the PCI Expamsion slot, but it only takes half-size PCI cards. Can anyone recommend a half-size PCI graphics card that will be compatible with a Latitude D620?

Just a quick update......you do NOT need a video card to extend your desk top over 2 monitors. I have 2 widescreen monitors, and using both the DVI and Video outputs of a dock together with the Dell graphic options on the desktop, you can use 2 external monitors with the standard Dell setup.

I don't know if Diamond is on commission, but I now have an additional $300 dock I didn't need.

I have a D630 and a D/Port replicator.  After searching the message boards and one useless call to Dell support, I was able to figure out how to get dual Extended Desktop display using two Samsung 204B LCD displays at 1600x1200 with the lid of the laptop closed.  My laptop has the Intel chipset graphics rather than the ATI or other graphics adapter.  I'm using Vista Ultimate, as that probably has some impact on this.

Dell customer support told me that it was impossible to get dual external monitor support out of the D/port APR.  The guy gave me a bogus explanation about how the chipset works.

The end result was that able to get it to work after messing around for a while.

I was able to right click on the desktop, go to "Graphics Properties".  In the popup "Intel Graphics..." window, there was an option to set "Extended Desktop" and select the Primary Device and the Secondary Device.  I set the primary device to "monitor" and the secondary to "Digital Display".

I noticed that if I opened the laptop lid, an extra option for display would come up in the Intel window - the notebook (the native laptop screen).

For some reason (probably bad SW) when I first tried to set "monitor" and "digital display", it didn't work.  The Digital Display wouldn't turn on.  To make it work, I tried different combinations of the laptop native display (the LCD attached to the laptop itself), the "monitor" (e.g. the VGA port), and the "digital display" (e.g. the DVI connector).

After setting to "Dual display clone" with the laptop display and the "monitor", I was then able to change the display to the laptop display and the VGA connected LCD.  I then changed to dual display clone with the "monitor" and "digital display".  This was good since the DVI connected LCD finally turned on and worked.  AFter that I was able to change to "extended desktop" mode and things worked.

After applying, I changed the Display Settings to be what I wanted (1600x1200, 32bpp).

I've been able to reboot and the settings stick.  I've also been able to shutdown, undock, boot without the dock and have the laptop display work fine, then shutdown, dock, and boot.  The external extended desktop display worked fine.

So here we are, Dell support doesn't work and the customer is on his own to figure it out.

A step by step guide to make this work would apparently help out lots of people out there.  Too bad nobody from Dell has figured this out.
