External 3500 floppy on a 8600?

I've ordered the 8600 without a floppy drive, since I probably won't use it very often (read: less than once a year). But then I dug up my old Inspiron 3500 with standard came with a floppy drive which with a cable connected to the parallel port you can use externally (for example when your cd-player uses up the media-bay).

I was wondering if for some reason I need a floppy drive on my 8600, if I then could use that external 3500 floppy connected to my parallel port.... Anyone?

Very possibly, if not though, you can always buy a USB external floppy drive.

It won't work - it needs special support in the BIOS.  That was only implemented in the models up to and including the 4x00 lines.
