External Monitor - Resolution

Hi guys,

I've just got a new Latitude C540/C640 (not sure which!) at work, running NT4. I'm running through a 19" external monitor. However, when I increase the screen resolution to over 1024 x 768 it goes into "pan mode" on both the lap top and the external monitor. Is there any way to stop it going into pan mode on the external monitor?

Thanks,

Jim

Jim_Cross,

Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum.

Unfortunately, due to the way LCDs work, no.
Our notebooks’ LCDs have a resolution that look best at and going over (or under) that resolution can dramatically reduce the picture quality.

I have an two month old Inspiron 5150 with 15" SXGA+ video (1400x1050), which I selected because UXGA images were simply too small for my tired old eyes to read graphics-generated type (such as on many Web sites) at full resolution on the built-in monitor.  If I add a larger external LCD monitor such as the Dell 1901FP, whose maximum resolution is 1280x1024, will the images on the external monitor be distorted because the pixel ratio is different than on the built-in monitor?  If so, is there any way to avoid this, or am I just out of luck?

What would happen if I were to purchase a 20.1" monitor, such as the Dell 2001FP?  I believe that, with my SXGA+ video card, I will not be able to drive this external monitor at its optimum resolution mode of 1600x1200.  It doesn't have a built-in SXGA+ mode, and anyway I have been told that LCD monitors don't produce good images at other than their design resolutions.

Is there ANY resolution that is available where I can use a larger external LCD monitor and still get the correct display ratio AND optimum resolution?
