Extra characters when I type

I have an Inspiron 1200 and all of the sudden I now get extra character when I type. (I edited this sentence)

When I type, it looks like this:

Whe3n I* typ0e3, i8t lo9o9ks li8ke3 thi8s

Help anyone?

You can try a couple of steps. Shut down the computer, unplug the ac adapter and remove the battery. Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds. Connect back the ac adapter and put the battery back in, turn on the computer and check if it works. If it does not, you may have to reseat the keyboard connector. Here is the link on how the keyboard cable can be reseated. If the computer is under warranty, please make sure you have a dell technical support agent online while you are doing this.

Thanks so much for the help!  I first tried to reset my computer per your instructions but that did not resolve the problem. I then followed your link and reset my keyboard, and this did in fact address the situation successfully. My computer is just out of warranty so I did this myself, but you are very wise to point out the idea of contacting Dell before a person should disassemble the device.

Once again, thanks a million for your expert advice.
