I just got the XPS studio 16 (it came last week) and so far it's working great (the laptop), but I noticed the exact same thing.  I've only left it plugged in atm long enough to recharge the battery while using it, and the AC brick is scorching hot.  It doesnt' seem to be getting any hotter though, so I'm wondering if this is normal since the brick is so thin? It was shocking enough touching it though to get me to come online to check if anyone has similiar stories.

But something I'm worried about is that the AC brick is making sounds.  Like a low crackle sound? Is that normal?

Edited to add, the model name of my adapter is : HA90PE1-00

Well I actually only noticed that it would make the clicking/insect sound when it was charging while in use, or if it's plugged in and trying to process information. But the AC adapter after the first few days stopped getting super hot.  It still makes that low clicking sound but not as loudly as it first did.

The laptop itself seems to run at a high temperature (especially around the touchpad area) but after letting a few people check it out at work, they all agreed that it didn't feel any much hotter then any other laptop they've come across.  So as a first time laptop user, I guess the extreme heat is just the norm.

Same issue here with a new studio xps 16. The initial charger was extremely hot and buzzed/crackled when charging. Requested tech support send a replacement and they sent what appears to be a used/refurb charger which has the same problems. Maybe its normal but I'd like to hear opinions/comments from other users of the 90W brick.

yes! here's a similar story: I got my Studio 17 four days ago and noticed that the brick portion of the included 90W adapter runs quite hot (about 40-45 C) after being powered on for no more than 15-20 minutes.

with the exception of a slightly warm touchpad area (presumably where the hard drive is), the rest of the notebook stays very cool.
(but having said that, I did buy a notebook cooler to elevate and cool the beast).

I can pick up the adapter and hold it in my hands without burning myself (it's not as hot as a freshly baked hot potato) but yesterday,
shortly before powering it off for the night, for the first time, I heard that "low cracking noise" that other people here have also mentioned.

Same issue here with my Studio 15.  Tech support sent me a replacement but it also gets very hot (too hot).  The computer itself does not get hot.

I am having this same problem. I find it amazing that Dell hasn't chimed in on this subject. Especially after the big fiasco before with the fires.

I am tired of burning myself when I unplug my computer.

See this thread about replacing adapters for the Studio XPS 1645 model.    We're still working on the Studio 1747 and Studio XPS 1647 lines but hope to have more information soon.

I would HIGHLY recommend that if you're seeing that hot of an adapter that you contact Tech Support and see if they can send you a 130w adapter.   Not sure that they can at this point but if you do have one of the 1645 models they would be able to.

I talked to tech support late last year and they also sent me a replacement (still a 90W though, not a 130W) adapter.
The replacement adapter is still really hot and a low crackling noise continues to be heard when plugged in.

See this post in the above linked thread.     Customers who experience heating issues with the Studio 1747 or Studio XPS 1645/47 models can contact Dell's technical support groups and request a replacement 130 watt adapter be shipped out to them.  If you have not yet done so the Dell Techs should walk you through updating to the latest BIOS and then if you continue to have the heating issues with the adapter send out a replacement.

If you speak to a Dell Tech and they tell you this isn't the case I would recommend you kindly ask them to review their internal KB articles referencing those models and CPU throttling and / or overheating.   If they still don't see it then ask them to speak to their team lead or manager.

The article is published on our internal KB, the techs just need to read it.

Greetings from Canada. I'd spent over an hour on the phone with Tech Support earlier this month, trying to get the 130W AC adapter replacement, speaking to three different levels of tech support that insisted on sending me a 90W adapter instead of the 130W adapter (despite my asking them to review the internal KB articles). after expressing my dissatisfaction and frustration with this decision, the issue got escalated (and a case # given) with a followup phone call a day afterwards.

FOLLOWUP: I did hear back from Dell support and a 130W adapter was shipped out to me very quickly (within 24-48 hours). the 130W power adapter has proven to be a lot cooler than the 90W adapter was!

I have the same problem I have Dell 1555 and the adapter ( black brick) will get hot

June 9th, 2010 09:00

Hey so i have a studio 15 laptop (I JUST got this YESTERDAY!!) and the AC adapter burns up like no other in only a matter of a few minutes!! I"ve tried different outlets and i get the same result :\.

Should I request the same thing? The 130 watt adapter? Or will there be compatibility issues since mine is a studio 15 and so far the others have gotten replacements for their 1747 and 1645/47 models?

Thanks!! And what is this updating BiOS thing?

edit:

So I called up dell and they said they would replace my 90w one with a 90w one, the technician didn't really say anything after I asked him about the 130 w :X, he just went ahead and ordered the 90w one and told me that I should just wait and see if the new one fixes the problem or not. Hopefully it does, but if it doesn't, will the 130 w option work for a studio 15? Anybody know?

I would also like to know if the Studio 1555 ac adapter hot issue has been addressed as well. Or possibly if you are working on it. If I hold the ac adapter for over a few seconds it will burn you.
