so i guess from all your replays its either that my problem has no answer or not a single person of the 82 who viewed my topic so far knows how to solve it.. i'll downgrade to A05 and see what happens even though i think its absurd but i have no other option

Sorry I don't have the solution, but I do have exactly your problem (assuming your Fn keys change settings but will not display anything on screen).

I have a Dell 600m laptop with Windows XP Professional SP2, but I have not updated by BIOS as you have.

My function keys do not display anything on the screen, but they do change the settings.  For example, if I use the volume control keys (or the Fn Page Up/down keys) the volume will change, its just that there is no level indicator or bar displayed on the screen.  None of the other Fn key combinations dispay anything either e.g. the battery level key.

I did read somewhere someone say in response to a similar problem with a Logitech keyboard on another forum that the problem may be the keyboard driver.  I am too scared to delete my driver then reinstall it for fear it will only make things worse e.g. say it will not start again.  However, you have installed all drivers again and it did not help.

Like you, the Fn keys were working and now they do not (with display of info).  It may not have anything to with BIOS, because I did not change mine.

The only other trouble I have had has been the Svchost program causing a problem on shutdown every now and then (something about not being able to read memory at location 000000), though this seems completely unrelated.

The answer is in message " FN KEYS --SOME ARE NOT FUNCTIONAL--HOW DO I ACTIVATE ? " by pillmanwba dated 09-18-2001 on the Dell Community Forum.

The answer is to turn on Dell QuickSet.

As an aside, apparently QuickSet is now managing my wireless.  My wireless network was working nicely before this - here's hoping it still does next time I try to get a connection.
