Might not be the best solution, but you could use a program called i8kfangui to manually control when you want the fans to turn on/off. It isn't really a permanent fix, just temporary..

If the system shuts off during diagnostic tests on the fans get the fans/motherboard replaced, that's a failed diagnostic test.

Here's the information I have on this problem, or like viper says you can use Fangui as it has a built in fix for the bug. That's what I use but I do notice some rather large temperature sensor spikes that turn the fans on quite often. Do check your BIOS, this bug is in A08. Also know that a bad BIOS Flash can trash your motherboard.

BIOS bug. Hit Fn + Z. That stops the fans. Then Downloads tab above and get the latest BIOS for your notebook (floppy one ONLY!!), upgrade the BIOS by booting to the floppy that is made from the file you downloaded, then get fangui program from the link below to control the fans and the cpu temp and display the temp on the systray.

--------------------------------

Ahhh, the BIOS bug!  Get the latest floppy method upgrade and do it.  First, while it is at 85 degrees, hit Fn + Z together and see if the fans go off and the temp goes normal.  That verifies the BIOS bug.  It resets a bad cpu temp reading the BIOS made and never updated.
