Fast Access Facial Recognition Software
I just received my new XPS 16. After one or two logins, the Fast Access facial recognition software was working fine. Now, it apparently "unlearned me." It no longer "recognizes" me. I haven't changed my appearance. Lighting in the room is the same. I do get the frame around the face. It just won't log me in. It's kinda of like getting dumped by a girl after three dates. Humiliating really. I think I have suffered irreparable psychological damage, not to mention mental anguish. But that's another issue. Has this happened with anyone else. Can I repair the relationship?

Hi: I had the same problem at first,,, then it settled down and started to work the way it is suppose to... Now my problem is,,, I had some problems with the XPS 1640 ,,had to have Dell replace the HD ,and Cd Rom drive and the two speakers,,,, Now I have had to d/l the drivers and the software too,, all I have left to do is the Facial Recognition and the Dell web cam,,, Have you ever tried to D/l something form teh web site called the "My Dell D/l " site,, what a mess that is,, it takes you in a loop ,from the start you put in your tag number then it takes you to the Dell d/l site to where you can see what you have fromt eh factory ,,so you click on what came with your factory installed programs, and it takes you right back where you started ,,with registering and putting in the tag number,, what a mess, have you had this problem ,and if so ,,what have you been able to do with Dell ahve they helped you out yet??? I have had no success yet.,..

No worries...a little counseling and you'll both be just fine. :-)
Seriously, though, what you're seeing is perfectly normal. Recognition is not and will never be 100%. The goal of the software is to reduce manual logins, but they will never go away entirely. The good news is that FastAccess quite uniquely uses an active learning algorithm. This means that the more you use the system the better it will become at recognizing you. Even after it knows you quite well, however, the occasional false negative is to be expected. When this happens just log in manually and FastAccess will learn...making the next recognition attempt more likely to succeed and succeed quickly.
Please refer to this FAQ for additional details about basic recognition and other FastAccess related topics:

There are times when the lighting is not good enough for Fast Access to log me in or I do not want to wait for it to recognize me. When I manually log in it always seems to log in fine then within a few seconds it dumps me back to the log in screen! Sometimes 2 times in a row so I have to type my password 3 times!!! Fast Access is slow to come up and recognize me. I have had this Studio XPS 1640 for a few months and upgraded to Windows 7 a month ago so I do not think it should be having trouble. Is there a solution to this problem or should I simply disable it alltogether?

What version of FastAccess are you using?
What security mode are you running in?

Yes, if you're running 2.2.13 under Win7 then I would expect you to have issues. You'll need to update to 2.4.7 for Win7 compatibility.

I guess I am stuck with the old version then.....I inserted the disc, it said I am done with the upgrade. I browsed the disc but cannot make sense out of the names of the files. Nothing that even resembles Fast Access.
I searched Dell site......no updated version found. Makes me wonder what else did not get upgraded on this machine.........
When I was doing the upgrade it kept telling me to uninstall things or the upgrade could not continue.....Fast Access was one of these things. Mc Affee was another. Needless to say, the upgrade did not go smoothly. At one point the computer would not even boot!
It is running OK it seems now. But, now I wonder how many other things are now not compatable with Windows 7??? Fast Access is going to be disabled since it cannot be fixed. Updated software that is unavailable. Great!

Good news...the update is actually a lot easier than you're making it.
1. Open the FastAccess Management console (double click the "FA" icon in your system tray)
2. Click the "Advanced" button
3. Click the "Check for updates" link in the lower left corner.
4. Follow the wizard to install any updates that it finds.
You can also just go to the Windows menu > All Programs > FastAccess facial recognition > "Check for updates" to do exactly the same thing.

Yes, I found this when I went to disable Fast Access. I checked for the update and it found it but, I had to do this 2 times to get to the 2.4.7. At first it updated it to only 2.3.78. I am one who pokes around to find things. But, I would not have known that the version I had was no Win 7 compatable if you had not told me. Thank you for helping me fix it.
But, I still wonder what else does not have current Win 7 drivers. And what software still needs updating. I still have a problem running some online video at some sites due to Adobe not having an update for Flash in Win 7 64bit. And some software still brings up that annoying security box asking for my OK to run it.
But, thanks very much for the help! One more thing that works! YAY!

I seem to having more the less the same problem as the original poster to this thread with a new XPS 1647. It worked a couple of times the first day (now two weeks ago) and hasn't since. Keeps saying "have not recognized face yet please log in manually". Shouldn't it be saying "can no longer recognize your face" since it did at one time. And no - have not had a face transplant. I did check Fast Access for updates and it came back none required - latest version installed. If this can't be made to work is there a way to just uninstall it so it's not wasting resources and my time?

OK -sorted this out and it's now working correctly.. The key is to look at the camera (not keyboard) when logging in b/c that's when it stores your image for comparison. (found this by looking at logged images). So lesson learned - you have to "watch the birdie".

Also, if you look at the support section of the website, for monitor drivers, you can download FastAccess, regardless of wether your laptop came with it or not.
For example :
9MB download, which is FastAccess, worked perfectly well on my Inspiron 1564 - although it takes a little while to initialise after a coldboot.

To clarify, FastAccess is NOT free software. It may be bundled with certain systems (and is a paid option on others), but it is ONLY authorized to be installed on the machine on which it came originally. Any other use is a violation of the license agreement.
The one exception to this is the version that comes with the SX2210 monitor. In that case it can be installed on many machines, but will only actually run when the monitor and it's integrated web cam are connected.

Good observation. To be more specific, your face must be "detected" in order for face recognition to work. You know that it's detected by the fact that there are four green "corner" tracking the location of your face in the video. It is possible when typing your password to look so far down at your hands that your face is no longer in view (and of course you might not realize it because now you're looking at your hands, not the screen). Look back up and login and you should be fine.

I received an update for this software then the option to upgrade to the latest by paying $15. So I did, but when I installed it and went to use it, when my windows tried to open, my screen just started flashing repeatedly and would not open my Windows 7. So I uninstalled the upgrade, and reinstalled it, the same problem. So since I paid for it, it has been useless to me. Is there anybody who knows what the problem is that is causing this?
