File and folder permissions, Windows XP Home edition, Vostro 1000
I have recently reinstalled my Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 on a Dell Vostro 1000 machine. I am experiencing the problem of being denied access to some files and to a partition.
After performing a cut/paste operation on files in the My Documents folder, I am denied, in a few cases, access to the pasted file and this was clearly not my intention. I am unable to open, edit, copy, move or delete these files. I am also unable to copy folders that contain these files. I am the owner of the computer which is running alone, and not part of a network domain, so there is no one else who could grant file or folder permissions. For one of the other user accounts, access is also denied to the second partition, of my hard drive, L:\, even if I make that user a computer administrator.
I have researched the problem but without success. Microsoft Article ID: 307874 - Revision: 6.2 states that:
“If simple file sharing is enabled, the simple file sharing user interface is displayed instead of the Security and Sharing tabs. … If you disable simple file sharing, the classic Security and Sharing tabs appear, and you can specify which users and groups have access to shared folders on your computer.
Note You cannot disable simple file sharing in Windows XP Home Edition.”
I am using the XP Home edition but I need to reset the access permissions on these files, folders and the data partition. Apparently this is not possible within XP Home Edition
I wonder if there is some external software which I could run to enable me to do this?

Dear EJN63,
Thank you very much for your reply to my query. The problem was causing me much grief and I would never have guessed that this was the solution.
I did as you suggested and it worked well. I am now able to manage the permissions for my L:\ drive, the folders and files.
Amazing how some things that seem impossible become straightforward as soon as we know how!
Thanks again for your help which I appreciate very much.
Regards

You cannot disable simple file sharing in Home (that is true) but you CAN reassign the permissions. To do this you must take ownership of the files while in Safe Mode. Press F8 before Windows loads, and boot into Safe Mode. There, take ownership of the files in question.
