Fingerprint Reader Problem W/ Latitude E6400 - Sleep Mode

I'm having a wierd problem with the fingerprint reader on my new Latitude E6400.  So far, the kind folks at Dell have not been able to identify the problem or resolve it, and they say they have not had it reported before.

The problem is that the fingerprint reader does not work when you come out of standby mode.  But it works with every other mode.  When you start up the computer from shut down, or restart it, or log off and then try to log in, a dialogue box pops up that asks you to press ctrl + alt + delete OR to scan your fingerprint.  When coming out of shut down, restart, or log off, I scan my fingerprint and everything works perfectly.  It logs me back onto my desktop.

But when I come out of standby (aka sleep) mode, I get the same dialogue box, but it will not read my fingerprint.  I have to press ctrl + alt + delete, and then a second box pops up that asks me to enter my password or to scan my fingerprint.  At this box, it will accept the fingerprint and log me onto my desktop.  Again, the first box says you can press ctrl + alt + delete OR scan your fingerprint -- just like when you are restarting, etc., but it will not scan the fingerprint no matter how many times I do it or how long I wait.

There is no option in the Embassy security management software that I can see that would cause this.  I tried updating the driver for the fingerprint scanner, but it could not find a more suitable driver.

I am wondering if anybody has experienced a similar problem.

I'd also appreciate any suggestions on how to reolve this.  It seems to me that this is a problem with the interaction of the Embassy software and the Broadcom fingerprint reader, but I don't know.

P.S.  Dell suggested running a diagnostic on the fingerprint reader, but the fingerprint reader does not appear in the list of devices that you can run a diagnostic on.  I ran an express diagnostic, and nothing relevant turned up.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi,

I know this doesn't really help you, but I have 6 Precision M4400 and all of them have the same problem you are describing. There seems to be no fix yet, I will let you know if I find anything.

It is helpful to know that.  It suggests that it is not a problem with my laptop, but with the software or the intergration of the software and hardware.  I suggested to tech support that they confirm the problem on one of their own machines and then contact the software vendor to see if something could be done, but who knows if they will really follow up.

I have the same problem on my E6400 running Vista. I assume it's only standby mode but I think I've seen a few times coming back from locking it the fingerprint reader either doesn't work or will just sit there and think about what to do with a scanned print and never respond.

I'm currently having an issue on XP where after running windows and office updates the system no longer detects the scanner when you try to enroll fingerprints. Haven't worked through enough troubleshooting to say what's what but the fact I've recreated the problem, is a problem.

I know this is an old post, but I was having the exact same problem on my Vostro 3500: fingerprint reader works fine except when waking the laptop from sleep. I tried changing the power options for USB devices in sleep mode, and it seems to work now; I just tried it twice. (I am running Windows 7, but this should be the same for Vista.) Go to Power Options in the Control Panel, click on "Change Plan Settings". Click on "Change advanced power settings". Find the "USB settings" item, open it, and then open the "USB selective suspend setting" item. Change the drop-down options to "Disabled". Hope it works for you.

Confirmed the above fix on a Vostro 3750.  Thanks for sharing!

Problem has started again - the fingerprint reader only works when powering on, not when coming out of sleep mode/standby.

The USB settings are all set to disabled....
