If you're using Window 8.1 and all you want to do is login to Windows with fingerprint, then everything needed is already in Windows: change pc settings -> accounts -> sing-in options -> fingerprint.

In all other cases (windows 8.1 and you want more, or using windows < 8.1) then you need to install the application named "Dell Data Protection - Security Tools" (DDP|ST) which you'll find on the Dell download site for your notebook.

Also, your notebook should have come with the "Dell Digital Delivery" software that should periodically prompt you to install various Dell software, including DDP|ST.

I just received Dell Latitude e5440 on Aug 1, 2014, It was the same issue. I was not able to find any programs on Dell website. I contacted the support department. They asked me for money because I did not buy software warranty. I told them that I just bought Dell and it should work perfect. Otherwise I can return it. A guy talked to his supervisor and sent me to a department which deal with Latitude software (I doubt there is a special department for each model of Dell). So for money they could fix it but for free they got read of me. Hardware department got my call. They sent me to software department. Syed said will not do anything for free, it's a company policy. He said I should call customer service in order to help me. His manger was busy working with clients. That's what he said. The worst technical support I've ever had. Everything set up to collect money from customers. Thinking to return the laptop.
