Flash Bios Upgrade Error
I'm trying to upgrade my Inspiron 8000 bios to version A23, but I keep getting the following message:
Cannot run under a protected environment.
What does this mean? I have Windows XP (home version), and I've disabled my virus scan and McAfee Guardian software.
Can someone please help?

When I said run it in DOS, I meant for you to boot up in DOS with it if it has System files on it in addition to the Flash File. If it does not, you may have to make a System Diskette first, then transfer the Flash File to it after you download it, or use the System Disk as your destination for the Download. The Command Prompt you were trying to use is still a DOS Shell running under windows, and is still a protected environment. DOS from bootup is not protected.

Use this file and procedure - with the 8000 always use the floppy version.

Yes, she truly must be one of the lucky ones. Too many times, using the hard disk BIOS update for the earlier notebooks lead to disaster.
