GPU at 72C Idle! 169MHZ coreclock/100MHZ memoryclock
Hello, I bought this XPS 1530 laptop in end january, the problem is that the GPU (Geforce 8600M GT DDR3) is very hot, even when idle at 72C for a clock speed of 169Mhz Core and 100Mhz Memory (checked using GPU-Z and Nvidia monitor), when playing games or watching movies, the speed goes to the maximum (475core/700memory), but then, the temperature can go up to 105C!!!
I even tried using a cool mat, something of Targus brand (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10092149&catid=25597),
but it doenst really work. I think there might be something wrong with my system, because it's relatively new and when I was playing UT3, the laptop would shut down automatically after about 20mins, but when i boot up again, there isnt a message about overheating.
Thank you very much!

Those clock speeds are normal for simple 2D usage; the clocks are throttled back to conserve battery life. Call uo CPU-z and then run something with 3-D, such as the Vista windows flip, Windows Key+Tab. The GPU speeds will go to normal, and then slowly reduce after the load is removed.
However, your temps are too high. You should be more in the 50-80° range. Install I8kguifan, a freebee that displays all temps for the computer and also allows you to set up a temp/fan program different than that used by the BIOS. If you still see high temps, contact Dell. Perhaps the heat sink is improperly installed or the fan is not working. Does the fan come on ever?

The fan is at max, around 4600 RPM i think, according to I8kfanGUI, I installed it already, but the temperature it displays for the GPU is wrong, because while GPUz, Nvidia monitor and Rivatuner displays the temps as 72C when idle, I8kfan shows that it's only around 50C.
Also, the manual fan control doesnt work, because it says the no supported sensor chip found
Thank you for your reply

Well i tried changing the interger, but everything after 3 gives me a 0C temp, and if i set it to 3, it gives me about 20C lower than the one showed by gpuz
Also, using 18kfan, i noticed that the memory is always the hottest, like when running resource intensive apps, it would go up to 95-100C
Also, my laptop just shut down by itself again, I was just downloading files for Guild Wars, which run fine on my old windows xp desktop.
So maybe there is something wrong with my machine, should I give it back, and how do I do that without hassles?

In I8kfangui, go into Options, Advanced tab, change the GPU sensor index to 4 .... then check and see if it matches the correct temperature... you may also need to change the GPU temp. offset to 7 ( depending on what drivers you are using ) or change it to whatever you need to match nvidia monitor or rivatuner..
yes, your temperatures are WAY to high for that system.. you probably already did this but you never know: blow out the fan intakes and exhausts with compressed air... ;)
good luck and let us know !!

I had not used fan control on the M1530 because the BIOS control program was OK. However I have now found that I also can not control the fan wi I8kfangui. Perhaps an updated program will allow this. Although I8k indicates it can't find a sensor, this is not true, as it reports all temps and the fan speed, so has to be reading the sensors. The problem is that it can not turn the fans on and off. Most dell laptops work with I8k, so maybe ours is too new.
My fan speed has never gone to high, only low (3000 rpm). My CPU/GPU temps cycle between about 45 and 55°C. GPU-z reads about 8°C higher.
Perhaps the CPU heat sink is not properly attached. You should not be getting 72° at idle. A number of posters have complained about hot running M1530s. The heat sink is the only variable except for CPU speed. I have mine set to throttle back at no load even when plugged in.
