General Sound Card Question

I have 1 Dimension and 3 Inspiron computers.  They are all at least 2 years old and each has Creative SoundBlaster audio.  The Soundblaster includes a real-time recorder in each system.  My question is .............  do the new soundcards that Dell provides with the new systems include a real-time recorder where I can record what I listen to in real time????

Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this for me.

The soundcards can record in real time if there is recording software on your machine. The only programs my Inspiron 1100 came with which can record from external inputs are Windows Sound Recorder and MusicMatch Jukebox (which will only record from the mic input unless you upgrade to the Plus version for $20).

Or by, 'in real time', do you mean do the Dells have something like the SoundBlasters' 'What U Hear' , which allows for recording internally any sound which passes through the soundcard. That is a great feature built into the Creative drivers, but I haven't seen anything like that on my Dell. A workaround for that is to connect the line out to the line in with a cable.

Hope this helps. Jim

Jimco.............  thanks for the quick response to my query!

I am most definitely referring to SoundBlaster's "What U Hear" recording feature. It has been a godsend for me when dealing with .ram files and trying to make conversions to mp3's.  I also send Data files to clients and I find that recording a .wav file at the beginning explaining things that are on the disk is extraordinarily helpful to them.

I have to purchase some new computers and I desperately want to keep that SoundBlaster feature.  After some investigation with Dell, I find that the new soundcards are built right into the motherboard and can't be changed.  Way too bad for me!!!!!

Check out the new SoundBlaster Audigy2 usb card. It plugs into the usb port of the laptop and serves as an external equivalent of a regular SoundBlaster card. I'm pretty sure it has What U Hear. It lists about $130 but I've seen it on sale for $60 after rebates.  Don't despair!   Jim

I use the Audigy 2 NX with my 5150, it indeed does have What U Hear.

Edit: the Audigy 2 NX requires a seperate power adapter, so using it while mobile isn't really an option.  The SB MP3+ doesn't require an external power adapter, but I can't say first hand if it has "What U Hear".

jk79, Thanks for the tip about the SB MP3+. That's a good solution. I checked it out at their site and couldn't nail down for sure if it has What U Hear, but I would think it does.

JK,

I got the SoundBlaster mp3 usb device. Thank you for suggesting it. It is an incredible value for what it does.

No 'what u hear' on the control panel.

Jimco- Took me a while to find it on my Audigy.  In the Windows volume control panel, select options->properties->show Recording->Select all that are available.  Whatever recording device you select for recording will show up in the Creative volume control.  I'm not sure if the MP3+ supports "What U Hear", but if it is available, you will find it this way.

Edit: In the Creative Volume control, you click on the Logo directly above the Recording Volume bar to switch between recording sources.

JK,

No luck on the 'what u hear'. Interestingly, a grayed out  wuh volume slider is on the creative volume panel. It doesn't matter to me as I would rarely use it. I miss the Creative Recorder which used to come with the sound cards. I guess the MediaSource player/recorder is meant to be an improvement but I liked the other one better.

Thanks. I had not noticed that.    Jim
