Getting a boot/bcd error on dell XPS 501x running windows 7 64 bit
I've had the computer for just over a year bought new from dell with no issues. I started it up today and got the boot/bcd error message. I've read though some of the forums and tried putting in the windows 7 reinstallation DVD but it doesn't run it. I've also tried hitting fn f12 as soon as I see the dell logo but when I do it just freezes on it. I need all the data on the computer and I've never hd an issues prior. What would cause this and how can I fix it ASAP. Please help!

Hi jrbutler14,
May I know when did the issue begin? And have any changes been made on the computer recently, such as an installation or upgrade?
Answering the 2nd question, you can contact a local technician for data backup.
Based on the current situation, I suggest the following steps to troubleshoot the issue to resolve the BCD error.
You can try any one of the below mentioned steps which can resolve the issue.
1: Startup Repair from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)
To repair your computer using Startup Repair follow these steps:
1. Boot into 7 installation DVD
2. Choose your language settings and click Next
3. Click Repair your computer
4. Choose your operating system and click Next. This should bring up System Recovery Options.
5. Click on Startup Repair
Startup Repair should now start diagnosing your system to identify the root cause of the failure. Once it has identified the root cause, it would automatically start repairing your computer.
2: Rebuild BCD
1. Put the Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2. Press a key when the message indicating "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD appears.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click “Next”.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click “Next”.
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
7. Type BOOTREC /FIXMBR, and then press ENTER.
8. Type BOOTREC /FIXBOOT, and then press ENTER.
9. Type BOOTREC /REBUILDBCD, and then press ENTER.
Keep me posted if you need any help.
