The hard drive is dying -- you'll need to replace it. Unfortunately, the type of drive this model needs (EIDE or parallel ATA) hasn't been made since Fall, 2011 -- you'll need to look for a used or an old-stock drive.
Newer SATA drives will not work with this system -- you need a parallel ATA drive, 9.5 mm or slimmer.

Forgot to mention. XP sp3 with 30 GIG Hard drive. Dell Latitude D500

Thanks, kind of thought so. I should gave one some where's in a box in the basement lol. Over the years I save parts as I scrapped computers
