Hi Fios,

The Inspiron 5721/17 (Mainstream) ships with an integrated Intel® HD 4000 display interface or an optional discrete video option.

This computer is also available with AMD Radeon HD 7670M and AMD Radeon HD 8730M discrete graphics options.

If the computer was ordered with AMD Radeon graphic card, you can check in the device manager:

  • From the Start screen, swipe up and tap the All apps icon.
  • If you have a mouse, right-click on the Start screen and then click All apps.
  • Once on the Apps screen, scroll or swipe to the right until you see the Windows System heading.
  • Tap or click on Control Panel, located under Windows System.
  • Windows 8 will bring up the Desktop and automatically open the Control Panel.
  • Tap or click on the Hardware and Sound link.

Note: You won't see Hardware and Sound if your Control Panel view is set to Large icons or Small icons.

  • In the Hardware and Sound window, click or tap Device Manager, located under the Devices and Printers heading.
  • Select Device Manager and expand Display Adapters.

Display Adapter will be listed here

.

Awaiting your response!

It doesn't look like the current 5721 systems have the AMD video chip (it's a chip on the mainboard, not a card).

If you don't see a "swtiching graphics" control panel in the system,  and the operating system is installed by Dell, you don't have the AMD video chip.

I`ve ordered the Inspiron 5721 with a integrated AMD Radeon HD 8730M. There is also a Catalyst Control Center preinstalled. But where do I see if there is really a AMD built in?

Hi Fios,

Please help me understand, are you talking about the video distortion/display issues on the computer?

Awaiting your response!

Windows will always see the Intel GPU as active, since it's the only one of the two that is physically connected to the screen.  All video data passes through the Intel GPU - even if it is processed by the AMD chip.

To select the AMD GPU, use the AMD Catalyst control panel.

Check the system specifications using the service tag - support.dell.com.  Looks like your system doesn't have the optional AMD hybrid video chip.

Hello,

I'm having the same problem as the guy who created que topic. I tried everything you said, but my computer only sees the Intel Graphics Card.

I'm sending a print of my Display adapters analysis.

Thanks

I only used, and still using, the Windows 8 that came with it. The only thing different I did was setting the language option to portuguese istead of English (original OS option).

Did you reinstall the OS - or install a different OS - since then?

But when I bought it on the store the box clearly said that I have an AMD Radeon HD 8730M. My computer came with an AMD tag glued to it.

Also I used some programs that could detect if I really have the Graphics card, and they all shown that I do.

IF THE GAMES HAD A POOR QUALITY  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

1. Update the Video drivers from the Dell website (ALL VIDEO DRIVERS)

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/uk/en/ukdhs1/ServiceTag/?s=BSD&~ck=mn

2, Install this ATI driver from AMD website. (AMD CATALYST CONTROL CENTER)

http://sites.amd.com/us/microsoft/windows-8/Pages/radeon-windows-8.aspx

when you setup this new driver you will got a new software with this ... tha name is:

AMD Gaming Evolved .....use this program because this program finding your games on the your PC and if you will started the games from this program, the games will use ATI VIdeocard automaticly..... if you couldt see some games in this what you installed, you could find and add manually....   (2. picture link)

(you can set optimize the "grapichs settings" with some games, and you cant some other games but dont worry .... EVERY GAMES what you will started from this program  its working)

some pictures from the program:

Dear All,

I have also the 17R 5721 and actually was able to detect the AMD card. However now due to a water damage, my mainboard is faulty and I try to replace it (or repair, but seems not possible so far). However I cannot find a mainboard for this laptop anymore for a reasonable price. Does anyone here has an idea where I can get a fitting mainboard ? The details of the mainboard are: VAW11 LA-9102P. (14V2J or 052NW)

Thanks

ebnerj

The cost of these boards will be higher than you might expect because the processor is part of the mainboard -- which is they way most notebooks are now designed.  You might want to try EBay if you need a board, but from the prices I am seeing, it may be better to replace the system rather than the mainboard.
