Graphics card not switching, and Nvidia settings make no difference

Hi all,

Having a problem with my new Dell machine (Inspiron 17R with Nvidia Geforce GT 650M and Intel HD Graphics 4000).

When I try to run certain games they are complaining of not having enough VRAM (one game showed a message showing that it could only detect 32MB of VRAM, so the game could not run).

I only have a basic understanding of the way these video cards work, but as I understand it, the Intel HD Graphics 4000 should be 'handing over' to the Nvidia card when it detects that it is running a program that needs more VRAM - I strongly suspect that it is not doing this, and that is what is causing the problem.

Also, I read on another forum that someone suffering from a similar problem had solved it by going into the Nvidia Control Panel and adding a program-specific setting for their game, telling it to use the Nvidia card - I tried this, but it appears to have made no difference.

Does anyone know if I can somehow 'force' the system to use my Nvidia card? Or have I misunderstood what the problem is, and if so can anyone point me in the right direction to fixing the issue?

Thanks.

You configure the system to use the nVidia chip using the Optimus control panel.  The Intel GPU is always active -- ALL video information passes through it on the way to the screen.

There are many games and other applications that do not work with switching graphics - check with the publisher of the game or application for details on that.  Some need updates, while some older apps just will not run with switching video at all.

Thanks for the reply.

It was through the Optimus control panel that I made changes to tell the programs to use the Nvidia card - unfortunately this seems to have made no difference.

One of the games in question is fairly recent - I did check their official forums, and unfortunately found some posts that suggested other people had had similar problems, but found no solution.

I have the same issue with a 3 week on 17R SE I bought for my son.  The video performance has dropped and it is sluggish on games.  I have updated the BIOS to A14 and the drivers.  It is running Win8.0.  The WEI for graphics is 5.8.  It should be in the area of 7.0.  I see lots of complaints on this issue.  What is your WEI for this maching?
