HP CD Writer 8200 Series Driver Problem

I'm having difficulty getting my Inspiron 7500 running Microsoft ME to run my HP CD Writer 8200 series. The device manager sees the USB device but the driver that came with the writer isn't working. HP's website states that the Dell BIOS needs to be updated, which I did, but the driver still isn't working. Anyone else experience this and what can I do to solve this problem?

Thanks,

Richard

Windows ME is notorious for problems with USB devices.
Could you quote the exact error message?

Can I ask if this external writer ever function properly with your laptop?
If you have not already done so, my first line of attack would be to install an ASPI layer. I suggest you search the Web for forceAspi version 4.60 and install it.
Post back with your results.

I thought that I would help out and locate it for him.

ForceASPI v1.7 will install v4.60 of Adaptec's ASPI Layer.

Thanks for replying. I'm getting code 28 as the error message.

I installed Forceaspi but the device manager is still saying that the driver hasn't been loaded. I downloaded HP's lastest drivers and it still doesn't work. This is the first time trying to use the CD writer on the Dell laptop.

Code 28 means that the drivers for this device are not installed.  I guess you already new that.  This code also means that the device was not installed completely.

I would use the Reinstall driver button in your device manager.  If that does not work, try removing the device from Device Manager and using the Add New Hardware wizard to redetect it.
