Hard Drive Fail Questions

I have an Inspiron N5030. Had it for 1.5 years. A couple weeks ago I saw the following hard drive errors on routine scanning (a frustrating 6 months out of warranty):

SMART Short Self Test fail: WHD16-2B6

Targeted read Test fail: WHD20-EHX

SMART Thresholds Test fail: WHD18-NXX

SMART Status Test fail: WHD17-6T6

Windows/Dell Support Center said to backup everything (which I did) and replace the hard drive. I have three questions:

1. Do I really need to replace the hard drive?

2. Is San Disk 2.5" 240 Gb SATA 6Gb/s compatible with my system? (already bought it just in case; it was a good deal)

3. Is Windows included in Dell's "Download Factory Installed Software" option under My Account?

Thanks for helping. I'm a medical student with really not much experience with hardware failure.

1.  Yes.

2. Yes.

3.  No.  You can order a disc, however:

Can I use the Windows Create System Restore Disc?

Thank you. Looks like Dell will charge for actual CDs. If I used Windows Backup & Restore to make my backup, does that include Windows? I can't find Dell Data Safe to make system recovery discs and I think I may have uninstalled Dell DataSafe (cringe).

The  catch-22 is that you have to have at least the Windows disc before you can restore a Windows Backup.

Hi borisrizik,

You need not return the system; I will help you in fixing the problem.

“Targeted read Test fail: WHD20-EHX” message appears if there is a bad sector in the hard drive, to confirm this I suggest you to run hardware diagnostics on the hard drive. Please follow the below mentioned steps:

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Keep tapping the F12 key on the Dell Logo Screen.
  3.  From the One time boot menu select Diagnostics and Press Enter.
  4.  It runs a test on all the hardware components.
  5. If it test fails please capture the error code and let me know the error code, I would tell you the next course of action.

Please post the results.
