Help XPS M1730 wont pass post
Hiya,
I'm new to these forums so excuse me if I'm posting this in the wrong place. I have a problem with my XPS M1730, yesterday all was fine, today it won't pass post, occassionally, I'll get into the bios, but after a few seconds the fans go mad and it shuts down. Does anybody recognise these symptoms, and is there a fix ?
Many thanks

If under warranty, rush to DELL and log the problem
POST outputs diagnosis flash codes through keyboard lights etc.
Start with checking RAM, re-insert, swap, replace.
Diagnosis path is disconnecting devices - BT, WIFI, LAN, modem etc

Thanks for your quick reply LaptopNomad. I bought the laptop from a company called NDC (www.ndc.com) and since today is Saturday, I haven't been able to contact them yet, so not sure how my waranty will go. Interestingly, in order to look at the POST light diagnostics on the keyboard that you mentioned, I just turned the laptop back on and it booted all the way into windows before it died. During this it didn't give any errors. I'll try removing the memory modules one at a time to if memory is the issue. I'll keep you posted. In the mean time if you have any further suggestions, I'm willing to try just about anything. Thanks again.

Hi LaptopNomad, hows the weather out there in Dubai? I just removed one of the memory modules and it's now running startup repair (just in case) and has been for the last ten minutes, so I guess that was it. It was very slow through post, but I'll put that down to it not seeing the memory that it expected to see, and see how it posts' next time around.

Quick update, unfortunately, in order to rule out a fault in the sodimm slot, I moved the remaining memory module into the second sodimm slot, and the laptop once again failed to boot. Alas, even though I have now placed the memory module back in the first sodimm slot, the laptop is refusing to boot. I have now done a diagnostic boot, for as long as it lasts, and get first all three indicator lights flashing (I believe this indicates a mainboard fault) and then the caps lock light flashing, (which I believe indicates a memory failure). So I guess it's the mainboard thats the problem. Fingers crossed NDC will honour their warranty.

Now completely bamboozled! Turned the laptop on just now to double check before calling NDC, and it's just completed a complete diagnostic run without detecting a single fault?????
