Help (please!) needed with Inspiron 1721 BIOS update
Hi there,
I've recently upgraded (clean install) my Inspiron 1721 from the pre-installed 32bit Vista to 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium.
I have also added a further 2gb of RAM, now totalling 4gb.
I'm keen to upgrade the BIOS (given the changes above), but it seems that the Dell support page only shows BIOS for those pre-installed configurations.
For example, http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=BIOSA&catid=-1&dateid=-1&impid=-1&osl=EN&typeid=-1&formatid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_PM_1721&hidos=WLH&hidlang=en&TabIndex=&scanSupported=False&scanConsent=False
You can see that the latest BIOS for this system was released 25/5/08, however, I'm sure that there must be another BIOS release since then that is compatible with my laptop. It's just that on the support page this is the only one shown...
Can someone please help...?
Many thanks

Bios releases are discontinued after a few years. If you have the last released bios, you're fine. My old laptop has a bios that was released in 05 and still works fine. Windows doesn't depend on bios releases. It depends more on the hardware you have. If you don't have a 64 bit capable processor, you should install the 32 bit windows. If you look at the download list, you can select Bios as your category--no OS selection necessary.

Thanks Mary,
I hadn't realised that BIOS updates are discontinued (by the way my laptop does have a 64bit processor).
I guess the only question would be whether it would be advisable to install the newer BIOS of another similar Inspiron?

BIOS upgrade packages usually checks whether it's released for your laptop.
There's a growing community of BIOS mod'ers who want to run Vista and up on old computers.
Taking part in BIOS modding might brick your lappy for good if done wrong.
