Help with studio 17 touchscreen and pen/stylus
Is it just me, or does a pen/stylus not work on the studio 17 touchscreen laptop? my finger works and dell support (as great as they are...) said a stylus will work. Gave me drivers, installed them, stylus still doesn't work.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Having just gotten a Studio 1745 with touchscreen, I've been pretty curious about this myself.
Thanks to Google, I have found some helpful information on the subject.
To start, the reason regular styli won't work with the touchscreen has to do with the type of touchscreen it is.
According to this Wikipedia article, the Studio 17 has a capacitative display.
This article explains why capacitative displays cannot use (regular) styli. It does, however, note that a conductive stylus will work.
Conductive styli are a little rare, but some do exist. (For example, any stylus designed for the iPhone should be compatible with the Studio 17).
Here are a few styli in particular that claim to work with capacitative screens:
There was a glowing review of the Pogo Stylus at The Gadgeteer.
There's also a very enthusiastic video review of the Pogo Stylus here.
There is a review of this at Gadgeteer as well. The review was not especially positive; Pogo Stylus was recommended instead.
I wasn't able to find many reviews on this. Some people complained it was too soft and lacked precision.
In addition, you can, supposedly, make your own stylus for a capacitative display, but from what I've seen they don't necessarily work well. (For more info on this, search for "DIY iPhone stylus")
Personally, I'm considering the Pogo Sketch.
Has anyone else tried any of the conductive styli? What was your experience?
Thanks,

Try the Boxwave capacitive stylus. I got mine at Amazon.com for about $8. I just got mine today and it works well.
