How Does A Dell Default Factory Image Restore Work? I'm Not Sure If It's What I Need To Do. Help Please!

Hey all,

First and foremost, I'm glad to be a part of this community. I look forward to talking to a lot of you and making friends.

Regarding my issue, I have a Dell Studio 1535 laptop. I want to perform a Dell Factory Image Restore, but I'm a little scared.

A few months ago, I was forced to do a complete install of Windows Vista, and then the drivers and and all the programs. I DO NOT want to go through this nightmare again haha.

However, I might have done a few things wrong because many of my computer functions do not work properly. I just recently heard about the Dell Factory Image Restore, which supposedly brings my laptop back to the settings and everything it had when I opened it fresh out of the box.

Is that how it works?

I have a Recovery (D:) partition that is roughly 4 GB's. Inside I see a few files, which include a Factory Restore image ending in .wim

However, the Program Files folder in that partition is pretty empty, and I can't find a driver's folder anywhere.

Wouldn't the default programs and drivers be in that partition as well, so that this could be reverted to the way it came to me?

I'm confused.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much. And take care.

The image is just that - an image of everything that's on the C: partition from the factory.  Since you can now no longer boot to a restore from the hard drive, you must boot in some other way.  One such way is here:

I have no idea what an image file is haha.

So that image file, 4.73 GB, will have the drivers and programs that came preinstalled with my laptop when I first bought it?

I guess I'm just having a hard time understanding what the Dell Factory Image Restore does, even when I can't find drivers or other Program files in that Recovery partition.

First thing would be to make a full backup of your computer with Acronis home edition  for instance .

Than you can try any experience .

I don't know your system but usually there is an utility when you boot your computer and/or a dvd with a restore to factory .

Good luck

The image file contains everything that was on the system at ship time.  Restoring it restores all these files - they are all contained within the image.
