How does the the shared system/video memory work in the Vostro 1000?

I purchased the Vostro 1000 with 1GB of system memory and the 256MB integrated ATI video graphics. (Still waiting for it to be delivered.) I was reviewing some information I found in the specs about the video memory and how it works.

Video memory:
up to 128 MB of shared memory (with 256 MB of system memory)
up to 224 MB of shared memory (with 512 MB of system memory.

1. Is there something in the BIOS that will allow me to set how much video RAM I want the system to use?
2. Based on that table above from the system specs. Are the only settings 128MB AND 224MB?
3. If I choose 224MB is this table informing me that it takes 512MB of system memory to get the 224MB of video memory? Leaving me with 512MB of system memory.

If I have this all wrong can I get a clarification. Thanks

No. Allocation is done by the system - it is not user adjustable.

2. Based on that table above from the system specs. Are the only settings 128MB AND 224MB?

No. The 128 and 224 are MAX settings. The system will use up to that amount as needed.

3. If I choose 224MB is this table informing me that it takes 512MB of system memory to get the 224MB of video memory? Leaving me with 512MB of system memory.

Available RAM will be 512M - up to 224 for video, not 512 in addition to the video RAM.

If you're ordering XP, order with 1G minimum - that will leave you enough system RAM.

If you're ordering with Vista, order with 2G RAM - you will need it.

I think I understand it now. So this leads me to this question. The PC has 1GB of system RAM and can share up to 224MB to the video RAM. What is the default video RAM size of the PC before the system RAM is shared out to it (4,8,16,32,64,128MB)?

Zero. All the video RAM is shared system RAM.

I found the answer I was looking for. I guess I didn't really frame the question correctly in the initial post. ATI's display control center allows me to set the video frame buffer size. I wasn't sure how I would be able to do this. Most cases I've seen this done through the BIOS.
