How to connect to ext monitor

Hi,

i recently bought a new XPS13 with Ubuntu 14.04 pre installed including a docking station D3100. But i can't manage to get an ext. HD monitor working when using a HDMI cable or the Dell HDMI-2-DVI adapter.

Can anybody advice as i'm really frustrated and always read that there are problems with the Ubuntu version connecting to ext monitors.
