How to disable piezo beeper?

I've noticed there are two sound sources on my Inspiron 8600, the speakers, through which you hear music and system sounds, and what is apparently a piezoelectric buzzer/beeper. The latter is not affected by the system volume control or by plugging in headphones and is very loud. This beeper can be heard if you have a command prompt window open and the ASCII BELL character (0x07) is "displayed" as part of a program's text output. I'm guessing it's a holdover from the days of PCs with their little internal speaker (which in desktop systems I can usually easily disconnect).

I'd really like to be able to disable this.

OK, I'm answering my own question... There are several discussion threads relating to this issue on the Annoyances website (www.annoyances.org). Here's what worked for me, running Windows XP: Open up the Device Manager: 1. Start==>Control Panel==>System 2. Click on the Hardware tab. 3. Click on Device Manager button. 4. Click on View, then click on Show Hidden Devices (this isn't a "sticky" selection by the way; it'll revert to hidden again after a reboot). 5. This will make visible a tree of Non-Plug and Play Drivers on your hardware list, one of which will be named Beep. 6. Right-click on Beep and select disable. 7. Reboot for the change to take effect. Who knew? Apparently you can also do this via TweakUI.

Yeah...but,  if you have system problems you will get 'beep' codes that will help point you to a hardware problem. This happens during Power On Self Test (POST). You might want to reconsider...
