Bingo!  That's what I wanted to hear!  Thanks, I'm also pretty sure he's running 1.1 for whatever reason!  He has installed SP1 and SP2, but apparently something didn't take.  I'll have him do what you suggested and I'm sure that'll fix it!  Thanks again!

If you are in any way sceptical, have a look in device manager under USB and you will find an enhanced USB controller.

Finding that enhanced controller is a sure sign that the laptop supports USB 2.

From the sound of your posting I believe that your USB ports are indeed running at USB 1.1 speed.

In order to utilise USB 2 functionality in addition to having the enhanced USB controller you must also have the necessary USB 2 drivers which are included in both sp1 and sp2.

If your laptop is using either of the service packs then I suggest that you delete everything under USB in device manager then reboot your computer. On restart, Windows will redetect your USB hardware and re-enumerate it.

Your USB ports should now have USB 2 functionality.

Thanks again.  The 'enhanced' controller line is listed in there, but every so often my son (it's his laptop) gets a message about 'upgrading to 2.0 for additional speed and stability' (or something along those lines)...  it leads him to believe he's running 1.1...

No, it's USB...  1100 he's got only has two, they're hard to miss!
