How to speed up my computer

I have a E1505 laptop, and when i got it it was very fast and reliable, but now it is slow. So I cleaned my disk, moved all of these files from my C: drive to an extrenal E: drive, and uninstalled programs and defragmented, but it still shows that I have the same problem, and little space in my C: drive even though I removed alot from it.

It's not the easiest thing to do, but I would recommend backing up your data from the C drive, and reinstall XP and then your programs.

When you reinstall, you should start clean, so you want to re-format the drive.

Also, make sure you first download all the newest drivers from the Dell support site.

Don't install any programs you're not sure you'll use. Keep it somewhat simple, and you'll get your speed back.

Also, have you got the maximum RAM installed? Memory is cheap now.

WAIT! What do you mean there is a difference...when I did it last time I had to reput in all of the start up stuff, options and settings, ofcourse I had to back up all of my data because it told me to, but what is reinstalling. FYI E1505 does not come with the XP disk.

Your laptop takes a maximum of 2 Gig of RAM. You can get 2 Gig right now for about $30.

You can find a service manual at the Dell support site. It will give some info about installing RAM. That will definitely give you the most bang for the buck and the time. It's an easy fix that will speed it up, but I'm assuming you've got either 1 Gig or 512 MB installed now. If you've already got 2Gig, then you are at the max.

Don't confuse restarting with re-installing Windows. You might want to get some help doing this from your local nerd if you're not comfortable with it.

Restarting means you select "restart" and the computer shuts down and starts up again.

Re-installing XP means you are backing up your data, wiping the hard drive and reinstalling XP, and then your programs. I have the impression you might not want to do this yourself without someone to help, so do not do this unless you are sure of what you are doing.

In the meantime, check your system.. go to Control Panel -> System and see how much RAM you have, and if you have less than 2G, you can upgrade and that will make a difference.

Don't you have a 'Restore' partition on your hard drive - 'coz that would be the easiest/quickest way to get your laptop back to exactly how it was when you bought it :emotion-55:

You should check the Dell website for updates thereafter of course, but at least you'd be up and running again with minimum fuss.
