Because you’re using an OS that we have not tested on that computer, you may run into issues like that.
You might instead want to try using the FN key plus the key above the “backspace” to mute the speakers then.

Thanks for your answer. Is there any way to tell that the speaker is off instead of on before the computer makes the first sound when I boot it up? 

Also, I couldn't get this to work when I was using Fedora Linux. I kept getting an annoying beeping sound when I hit a key at certain times, e.g. hitting the backspace key at the beginning of a command line. Is this solvable?
