How to use line in?

I am basically wanting to use my laptop as a speaker. I am using a typical audio cable, and I have it plugged in to the speaker outlet, but can't get my computer to start recognizing it. It pops up an "Audio System Even" window and I can select Mcrophone, Line In, Open SigmaTel Audio Control Panel or Take No Action. I've tried both Line in and Microphonee. But it doesn't play the sound. I opened up a recording software and it records other noises in the room, not whats on the line. Does my computer just not have the capability since it doesn't have a microphone jack, even though it gives the option when plugged into speaker?

You should mention your model name and operating system whenever starting a new thread. The answer to your question depends on these.

If you plug a cable into a jack and you see a popup that lets you select mic or line-in, then you have plugged into the mic jack, not the speaker jack.

They all have mic jacks I believe.
