I think my hard drive is corrupted. How can I know for sure?

I did a dell factory restore on my Dell Inspirson 1525 and am now trying to download my mcafee and am getting an error message: "IE cannot download DMSetup.exe from download.mcafee.com. IE was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later. " I get a similar messages when I attempted to download other programs. I am thinking I need to replace the hard drive, but was hoping I can do something else less drastic. Initially the problem was IE wouldn't open and then I couldn't connect and then my network window wouldn't open. Hence the factory restore..Please help any advice is welcome.
Thank you.

Why would you think your hard drive is corrupted?? The error is saying that either you or McAffee is having network issues.  Also, it is known that viruses will specifically block internet communication between windows update and virus scan websites.  Since you did a restore you didn't have any virus protection and you were connected to the internet so it might be a possibility that you picked up something.

I'd suggest the following:

Have someone perform a virus scan on your machine from another computer.  I know it can be done, but I haven't tried it before.

Try downloading a different virus scan such as AVS, which is free.

Try a different network to download McAffee.

If you still think it's your hard drive, check your drive for errors and do a sector scan.  This will take a very long time so do it overnight, and be sure to disconnect your computer from the internet, since you probably won't have a virus scan program installed.

Also, stop using Internet Explorer.  Google Chrome is a much more secure way to browse the internet.

Hope this helps.
