I8200 Battery Malfunction?

One of my 8200's two batteries has malfunctioned but still seems to operate perfectly.  This problem occurred about the same time we had some lightning spikes yesterday--but nothing to knock any clocks off or flicker the lights that I noticed.  Anyway, the computer was off and I noticed that the battery LED was flashing amber 4 times quickly and then green once for a longer period and then repeats.  I'm using the bad battery now and it shows 87% remaining or 2:17 hrs/mins remaining.  I removed each battery one at a time to discover and isolate what was happening.  When I press the button on the bad battery the 1st, 3rd, and 5th LEDs flash all at the same time with the 2nd and 4th remaining off.

Since the battery seems to be working okay and charging okay I was wondering if there might not be some glitch that could be reset?  I don't know what to try at the moment so I am going to discharge it fully using the computer--hopefully.  It is a $145 item and I do have a second one.  If I can save some bucks "fixing" this one it would be fun to do.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to recover from what might be affecting the bad batter?  Any tricks?

Thank you.

i think running it down would be a start. i have a battery that when i push the button only 3 green lights come on but it charges to 100%. it only last 15 minutes so i know it's a bad battery.

I only had to run the machine a little longer before it suddenly dropped off to almost depleated and shut down.  This then reminded me of a very similar battery failure a year ago on a friends Inspiron.  So, I'm not going to try any further to somehow "fix" this one.  Thank you.

Has anyone ever opened up a battery pack to see if there might be any way an old set of cells might be replaced with a new set of commercially available cells??
