IDT High Definition Audio Driver Error

Long story short, Dell sent me a new hard drive to rebuild by Studio 1747 after Dell replaced the motherboard, LCD Panel and LCD cables.  They did not have a replacement hard drive when the day old machine had the 7 beep issue.  So they sent back the repaired laptop and told me a new hard drive would be sent later.  I started the process of re-installing tWindows 7 x64.  I was finally able to install the software and drives.  I am sure I did somethings out of order, if there is such an order.  Under the Device Manager (Sound, video and game controlles) section there are two devices:

High Definition Audio Device

IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

Everythings works until I reboot, then the Yellow Exclamation point is next to the IDT device and there is no sound.  The error is "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware.  The driver may be corrupt or missing. (Code 39)".  The drive installed for this device is IDT 6.10.0.6224 (7/16/2009).  I can re-install the drivers and everything works until I reboot again.

I have tried to uninstall the device along with the driver and just let windows do it job re-installing everything.  No such luck.

Any thoughts?

I too have this on my brand new studio 1555. Someone please give some solutions...

I am sure there is an answer because when I received the original laptop (Studio 1747) from Dell everything was working fine.  In fact I still have the original hard drive and everything works.  What doesn't work is when I had to re-install everything myself with the new hard drive provided by Dell.  I will keep the original until the end of the week, when I need to return it.

The orginal hardrive has the IDT drive (same version that I am trying to install on the new harddrive).  Hoepfully I will hear from someone with an answer.

I also was having other issues with the factory install so I decided to start fresh and re-deliver Windows 7 and all was going fine except that soon I relized that I was not hearing any system noises or other sounds from the laptop.  I looked into it and found that it too seemed to be missing the IDT  High Definition Audio Codec and ran the troublshooter and got the following:

Hello,  I have an Inspiron 1545 which has been working fine since I bought it in July but two days ago the sound stopped working (apparently no audio device output is installed).  After further investigation I have exclamation marks next to 3 things in device manager - these are IDT High Def Audio CODEC, Integrated Webcam and Plug and play software enumerator.  I've tried to follows various helps and have downloaded reccommended bios / chipset drivers, I've tried uninstalling the audio driver and reinstalling and just end up with the same error message in the corner (no audio output device installed) and since trying to fix original problem I am also now getting a couple of error messages popping up on my screen (upon rebooting) saying 'IDT PC Audio stopped working and was closed.  A problem caused the application to stop working correctly' and 'Dell Webcam central stopped working...'

This is driving me mad!  I didn't do anything to my PC to make it stop working so surely it must have something to do with an automatic update??  There are 1000's of threads of people that seem to have very similar problems so if anyone found a solution please help!

hayley2608,

Try running the audio tests in Dell Diagnostics. These interactive audio tests are designed to narrow down the problem to either the software or hardware. The tests are independent of Windows and drivers, meaning it doesn't matter if those are working correctly or not. To run Dell Diagnostics

1. Restart the computer and tap the f12 key as soon as it starts to boot up .
2. Select 'Diagnostic' from the boot menu. The computer will run its pre-boot assessment tests (PSA) before Dell Diagnostics starts. During the PSA you will hear some tones through the system speaker but this does not adequately test the audio hardware. Dell Diagnostics plays an instrumental piece of music complete with drums, so if you only hear some tones then you have only run the PSA.
3. Dell Diagnostics should open after the PSA tests, or you should see an option to open it. If you have ever reformatted your entire hard drive then Dell Diagnostics will no longer be there as an option. In that case run it from the Drivers and Utilities (Resource) CD if you have one.
4. Select 'Custom', then the audio tests. (At this point - after you have opened Dell Diagnostic custom - if you can't find the option to select the audio tests that is a symptom of a failed audio chip.)
5. The tests will run. Alternate between using headphones and listening to speakers in case only one signal path is working.
The tests will play some audio and ask you whether you heard it.
6. If you don't hear the music during the test it definitely means there is a hardware failure somewhere in the system. In this case Dell will repair the computer if it is still under warranty.
7.If you do hear the audio during the test but not when you boot back into Windows, that almost always means the hardware is okay but there is a problem with the audio driver or with Windows.
8. Error codes: If you answer 'no' to any question that the test asks you, the test generates an error code that can tell a Dell technician that you answered 'no' to that question. The test does not know the exact component that has gone bad. Before answering 'no' to a question, make note of the circumstances at that point so you will know in general what the error code means.

*********************************************************************************************

If the hardware is okay then I suggest  you try doing a System Restore (page 42 of the 1545 Setup Guide) to a time before the problem occurred.

********************************************************************************************

If that does not help then I suggest you use Factory Image Restore (on page 44 of the 1545 Setup Guide) which will fix all of your software problems. I have not seen any posts about the software device enumerator problem in several years. The main symptom of the enumerator problem is that you get the "device not detected" error, but this can be difficult to fix which is why I suggest using Factory Image Restore. But if you want to try to fix the problem without doing a restore then google 'Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator' .

**************************************************************************************

Edit to clarify: the enumerator problem causes the audio to stop working and cannot be fixed by installing audio drivers and such. There are some solutions on the internet but are difficult to implement.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your help so far - I have tried everything apart from Factory Image Restore (and am really hoping I don't have to resort to this)...  Further to the pnp enumerator I have found many pieces of advice that talk about saving/copying streamci.dll, machine.inf and swynem files to a temp folder - should I uninstall sound drivers first (and of course my failing pnp after copying files mentioned above) and then reinstall sound drivers and pnp from temp file?  Will this als fix my webcam?

Many thanks,

Hayley

I have never had to do it but the instructions call for uninstalling audio drivers and failing pnp. The audio drivers will try to reinstall unless you choose the option to delete their files from the hard drive which you should do. You can download the audio driver later.

I don't know if it will fix your webcam, or your audio either. I always thought this problem was fixed in Vista ... don't remember hearing about it on a model with either Vista or the webcams. You might have to do the Factory Image Restore. Good luck. As I recall some were able to get the pnp back by following the instructions but many couldn't.

I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 (x64) and started installing the drivers.  Everything was fine until I went to install the Creative Soundblaster X-Fi MB disk then my IDT HD Audio Codec issue resurfaces.  I have done some more research and came accross other people with a simular issue:

http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19305395/19592877.aspx#19592877

http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19303454/19585562.aspx#19585562

http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19306108/19596523.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&s=dhs

And I noticed that Dell finally posted the Win Vista to Win 7 update patch so things are looking better than they did a few days ago :)

P.S. I called Dell Support and was told by the East Indian Guy (who I could bearly understand) that he had to talk to his manager and he was arranging for me to return my Laptop and exchange it for a new one .... after being on hold for 20 minutes I hung up and started the process for re-delivering the product.

P.P.S Note that if you have re-partitioned your hard drive the factory image will not work.  http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/fixes.htm

Gulp. this is not good news then. I don't want to send back my laptop, I already have installed and setup lots of softwares and stored a lot of data.

Btw today I didn't get that error while booting up. The only different thing I did today was to boot to linux first and then restarted to windows. Does that point to anything?

I have the exact same problem as you, did you find the answer or solution around it as I have installed drivers many times but to no avail.

I have not been able to fix the problem either, but have not tried for the past couple of months.  Please continue to watch this thread in case I have any luck.

I was able to fix this issue.

When you see the muted sound icon in your taskbar, clicking it will prompt to install the driver.

It does a lot of process and fixes it temporarily. It comes up again when you reboot.

But when I cancelled the process somewhere after half of the progressbar, it got fixed. I don't know how,but i never had this issue again.

Did you talk to your dell customer care representative about this? They might get a technical representative to help.

Ameer.atif,

Hello. Your question is off-topic for this thread. I believe you would have better luck in getting an answer if you were to start a new thread for your issue.
