Insp 8500 Video problems
My Inspiron 8500 w/ATI Radeon 9000 has two recurring problems.
One is a "whiteout" (the display slowly goes almost pure white) which occasionally will occur shortly after an apparent normal bootup.
The other problem is no screen display at all during bootup, not even the "Dell" logo and/or the screen to select F2/F12. In these cases, the harddrive light appears as it normally would during a start, but there is no display whatsoever. After two or three poweroff shutdowns/restarts, it finally comes to life.
I have installed (twice) the M9XPA04L.EXE off the Dell site, (and did this without deleting the video driver) but to no apparent effect. Would deleting the driver before a reinstall be of help?
WinXP, 512k RAM, ATI Radeon 9000 /32mb.

pilgr,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
Attach an external monitor to the VGA port on the back of the system. Then using the Fn-F8 key combination, toggle the video signal to the external monitor and see if the display is good on the external monitor. Check if the same problem appears on the external monitor. If you have an intermittent problem, then you need to use this configuration until the problem appears. Most problems that appear on the LCD, and not on the external monitor will mean the replacement of the LCD.
If the external monitor works correctly, then it is a hardware problem, and uninstalling/reinstalling the driver will not help. You should contact Technical Support.

i too have the similar problem with the same hardware configuration:
- identical "whiteout" problem
- black screen at startup but i at least see a couple normal screens (dell logo, xp logo, & sometimes "welcome")
with additional os crashes (blue screens, etc.)
after repeated calls & device driver installations since october, i finally found this forum last night. in case you haven't checked out eglispor's posting, you may want to see if the little lid pin solution helps your black screen problem ...
