Inspiron 1100 problems

As a user of the Dell Inspiron 2600 Celeron-based notebook, a recently took delivery of the updated Inspiron 1100 2 GHz 14-inch Celeron.

Immediately, I noticed the following issues:

-- The new notebook is louder than the older one. Is there any way to disable or quiet the fan? One of the things I liked about the 2600 is that is was silent. Silent. Period.

NOTE TO DELL: WE *WORK* WITH OUR COMPUTERS. WORKING REQUIRES SILENCE. SILENCE. CUT OUT THE FAN NOISE. NOISY COMPUTERS *BAD.* QUIET COMPUTERS *GOOD.*

-- The screen of the new notebook is actually less vibrant than that on the 2600. I'm hoping to find some settings to be able to fix this. Cheaper parts being used?

-- This notebook is inexplicably slower than the 2600, even though the processor is rated as twice as fast. Everything is virtually the same except for the chip: same amount of memory, same Intel-based graphics subsystem, etc.

-- I notice some warming of the left wrist rest. I'm hoping this will not become a nuisance.

jdougher,

The Inspiron 1100 is probabley our noisiest portable system that we currently have, this is because it uses a Intel Pentium Celeron® running at 2.0 GHz or 2.4 GHz and not a mobile chip.

This is working as designed.

You may notice some heat from the left palmrest, this is due to the placement of the harddrive which is just below the left palmrest.

This is working as designed.

Thank you for choosing Dell.

John, which of your notebooks DO NOT have the warm left wrist problem?

jdougher,

It is my understanding that this happens with all the D series systems, the 1100, the 5100, and the 5150.

Thank you for choosing Dell.

Im having the same problem as you. I had a inspiron 2600, two years ago and it was the best laptop i had ever used. it was even better than my desktop. however i bought a inspiron 1100 last august, and this laptop is really bad compared to my older one. the speed is about the same, although its supposed to be 2 times faster.

also there is a constant noise coming from somewhere in the laptop. im not sure if its the CPU or the hard drive. but its really annoying. the only time the noise disappears is when i put the laptop on low power mode. Also when the laptop is turned off, if the AC cord is connected there is the same small screeching noise. Its a small issue but really annoying enough for me....

I've given up on Dell. I'll never buy another laptop from them. Very disappointed with the Inspiron 1100.

To top it off, though, the support personnel is absolutely horrendous these days. If you don't get an Indian who barely speaks English, you'll end up with a surly American kid who just doesn't give a hoot and who knows next to nothing.
